We had the good fortune of connecting with MAC Boys Entertainment and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi MAC Boys, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor for our success has been LISTENING.
We are a very new company, however our team consists of very seasoned artists. However, we went to school for Performing Arts & Education, not business. So we are learning as we go and grow everyday!
Listening to understand and learn has helped us be successful. Listening to creative business owners and executives and directors and our artistic colleagues and even our community. The process is a bit overwhelming, but we are taking it one step at a time and giving ourselves grace as we continue on this creative business journey.
What should our readers know about your business?
MAC Boys Entertainment’s business ambitions are to not only increase black talent on stage and in entertainment, black Folx amongst audiences, and more black stories in the Central FL area, but to do it consistently. We want to practice what we preach and be intentional about the diversity, equity, and inclusion we want to see by being examples of that as we learn and grow! We are rooting for us first and foremost! Eventually, we will share the space more with other marginalized groups of people to hear their stories, be enriched with other cultures, and connect with Folx that don’t look like us.
What sets MAC Boys Entertainment apart from other companies is that our small team has a great impact because of our connections in the community. Our connections help us provide recommendations for other companies, hire and book entertainment, galvanize for community events, easily partnership with other organizations, put on productions, and more! Being so dynamic and well connected is what makes us unique and allows us to fit in many roles to achieve our goals.
It has not been an easy journey and so much personal development along with growing our business. We had to work very hard in working the business into our very busy, daily lives. We are meeting more, we are improving on communication and which forms works best for what, and we are listening to leaders and organizations and learning from their advice and through observation. Growing an entertainment company is LOTS of brain power, emotional efforts, collaboration & compromise, teamwork, and dedication!
We also overcome some of these challenges by connecting with our mentor, Jeff Revels, or connecting with each other by going on A MAC date. We may eat dinner, see a movie, have a men’s retreat, etc. We realize that in order to see the bigger picture, we need an outside perspective or an entirely different environment and sometimes, we need rest and recuperation.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When it comes to fun and itineraries, we can help!
Let’s start by saving a little money first so visiting the beaches could be a great start.
If you have a friend or know someone who works at any of the theme parks, you could get a day entry to SeaWorld, Disney, Universal, or take a trip to Busch Gardens!
If you like to have a little drink with nice chill music, there are some lounges and a couple of speakeasies too. If you’d like to turn up a bit with fun music and partying, Downtown Orlando is perfect and everything is walkable! There are rooftop bars and a beautiful lake to walk around there too.
When it comes to food, you have a slew of options. Sushi, Soul For, Pad Thai, Pho, Mexican, Sea Food, Korean BBQ, Cuban, Jamaican, Italian, Czech, Greek, Haitian, Vegan, Pop Up Food Trucks, ETC! Just search and pay attention to reviews!
When it comes to Art, there are so many free or pay what you can exhibits and museums. There is also expensive to cheap live shows and concerts and musicals and plays around. Dr. Phillips Center, Osceola Arts, CFC Arts, Orlando Family Stage, Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, Orlando Science Museum, Orlando Museum of Art, St. Luke’s Church, Whiskey Theatre Factory, Little Radical Theatrics, Black Theatre Girl Magic, New Generation Theatricals, etc!!!
If you like to dance you can also take some beginner or specialized classes at DGBEK Studios, Dance Xchange Academy, Motiv, Underground Movement, University of Performing Arts Centre.
There are also some nice parks to visit and walk through or take cute pictures. Some vineyards for wine tasting. Honestly, there’s always something going on in Orlando, so sometimes you can also search for what you might want and you just may find it!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Jeff Revels, the Artistic Director at Orlando Family Stage, which is the Family Theatre that has partnered with our Company, MAC Boys Entertainment.
Jeff is our mentor! He saw that we had a dream and knew that it was thrice as hard to start a business up without the proper funding or support so his idea was to mentor us and show us the ropes of how to operate and manage an entertainment company when it came to producing.
Jeff has also given us access to certain resources that not many startup companies have access to at all to help us succeed: Orlando Family Stage staff support, mentorship meetings, offerings of financial advice, access to Orlando Family Stage’s repertoire of, friendship and more – and all of it free of charge!
Jeff has been here every step of the way to support us as best as he can and we will be forever grateful for his belief in us and our dreams!
