We had the good fortune of connecting with Mackenzie Judge and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mackenzie, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
I think deciding to work for myself will of course always be an important decision that I made, however I wouldn’t of gotten to this point if I didn’t make what I think is truly the most important decision, which was leaving where I was before I decided to work for myself. We get so stuck in positions and jobs nowadays that we don’t like or are treated poorly in because we are afraid of the flip side. Where will I work after this? Would another position be even worse? It’s so unfortunate, but usually we have to be taken advantage of in the work place to a point where we get so fed up that then we finally decide to leave and do something better for ourselves.
For me, I think it was definitely nerve-racking to leave my old position because although I didn’t love it, it did feel comfortable to an extent and I knew at least what I was in for on a day to day basis. That being said, I still knew that I was never going to be able to create the life for myself that I wanted in that position and so therefore I think the most important decision I’ve ever made was getting out of that cycle to create a new one for myself.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Blonde PR is a chic boutique public relations and marketing firm that specializes in beauty, fashion, wellness, lifestyle, luxury and travel categories for brands and talent. What sets us a part is absolutely our transparent business model. So many firms and agencies are not fully clear or honest with their clients. Not all of them, but a lot of them. I think sometimes agencies forget that clients don’t really know how PR works or what is going on in the background, so for me it’s important that they know everything and have access to know everything. To me, that’s what they’re paying for as a part of their retainer, the backend work, so it only makes sense that they have the right to know.
We are less than a year old and so I don’t like to act like we’ve “made it” or “come so far” because we are truly still a new company. However, I do feel like I’ve been able to blow past our goals within the first year and that is something I am extremely proud of. I don’t think any business is essentially easy to create or run, so of course there’s no difference with this one, but I really do love what I am currently doing and feel like I get to learn more and more every day on how to deal with the challenges thrown my way and the best way(s) to pivot from them.
One thing I always get when people talk to me about my business is how did you start so young? I really think that when you’re aligned and know what you truly want, nothing is going to stop you whether it be age, finances, resources, etc. If you want it bad enough, you’ll always find a way and so I love to tell people to simply just start – you’ll put the puzzle together as you go.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When I’m in LA the first spot I always hit is the Cabana Cafe at The Beverly Hills Hotel. It’s the best lunch place in the entire city and the pink, girly, vintage vibe sitting by the pool with friends is better than any other place you’ll go to in the area!
I also love trying to always make it to Ysabel, Avra, Casa Madera, and if you want to go back to BHH (who wouldn’t), The Polo Lounge to name a few.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would never in a million years be where I am today without my parents. I grew up watching them own their own businesses really my whole life and knew that I wouldn’t be able to have it any other way either. The support that my mom has given me throughout not only my career but my whole life is absolutely amazing and the mentorship that I’ve obtained from my dad is something that I couldn’t ever get from anyone else, anywhere else. Through learning from them, I’ve been able to take on this business venture and dream of mine knowing that I have full support behind me, and that is an extremely special thing to have.
Blonde PR wouldn’t be a business without our amazing clients and our awesome team as well, so I truly can’t thank anyone who has worked or currently works with us enough for choosing us and supporting us. I definitely would not be able to do this all alone and I have my small but strong team to thank for their efforts and support that go into the day to day of our operations as well.
