We had the good fortune of connecting with Mackenzie Seymour and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mackenzie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued a creative career because I’ve never seen myself feeling fulfilled in a more traditional role. I’m not sure where that stems from, but I always told others I would make a living “doing my own thing, whatever that turned out to be.” Funny enough, when Thrifty Titties first began, our co-founder Barrit and I intended to resell thrifted t-shirts, but soon found that it was just not enough of a creative outlet to continue pursuing. Thus, we transformed Thrifty Titties into a more conducive creative outlet that allowed us to create our own art for clothing and spread a very specific message of encouraging bodily autonomy and authenticity within one’s own skin.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Thrifty Titties is a clothing brand based upon artistry and authenticity. We create original artwork for clothing meant to inspire bodily autonomy and authenticity within one’s own skin in the name of self-love. Our art is also meant to challenge social taboos and status quos surrounding bodies. As a sociologist, it was very important to me that this business was founded to make a difference in the world and the lives of our supporters. So the idea behind our artwork and clothing is to combat the expectations society has of people’s bodies because we truly believe everybody deserves to feel confident and shameless in their own skin. It is our strong values and unapologetic artwork that I believe sets us apart from others. Which brings me to a partnership I am very proud of, with Keep A Breast, a non-profit dedicated to breast cancer prevention. Our partnership with such an awesome organization means that we can tangibly make a difference in the realm of bodily autonomy and follow through on our company values. We’ve gotten where we are today by trying to get as much exposure and interaction with our community as we can. We attend as many artist and vendor markets as possible to get our name out there and spread the self-love. Growth has definitely not been easy by any means, but I’m still learning how to be a successful entrepreneur and what in business are my strengths and weaknesses. Ideally, the world would know about Thrifty Titties’ existence and the deep values that we have for social change.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, even better, I can tell you exactly what a day in San Diego looks like for Barrit and I, as she is my best friend and we do spend actual days like this. First, we hit up a delicious coffee shop, one of my favorites being Birdrock because of their Sandpiper hazelnut flavored latte. Then, we have a routine driving along the coast hitting up our favorite clothing thrift stores from Del Mar to Oceanside. We usually finish the day off with a great sandwich because I never don’t want a Board and Brew Baja Chicken Sandwich, which we go eat on the beach for the sunset. If I’m feeling extra adventurous we’ll even go down to the beach and look for rocks afterwards until it gets too dark. All and all a great day in San Diego!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First of all, the person that deserves a shoutout is our co-founder Barrit Feeley, who for all intents and purposes is family. She is responsible for the majority of Thrifty Titties’ artwork and is always there to lend a helping hand in any and all business matters that she can. Additionally, I have my family, especially my fiancé Christian, to thank for supporting me through this entrepreneurial journey and being there to listen to and guide me through every one of my Thrifty Titties’ ups and downs.
