We had the good fortune of connecting with Maddy Goshorn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maddy, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
The biggest goal through all the projects we make, is to generate empathy between people. I’ve always been a big fan of conversation, and I still believe that people can talk about anything as long as everyone keeps a calm mindset. I’ve personally learned so much from talking with people wherever I go. But it’s not always easy to talk about things that I don’t understand, or I haven’t lived through. While sometimes it’s uncomfortable to be the fool in those conversations, it’s so much better for us as people in order to connect with others.

I created my production company Determinal Velocity in the pursuit of showing the perspectives of a wide range of diverse people. And it’s through the stories, the crew, or the guests that we have on that bring a story empathy in some way or another.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My story is about discovery and determination.

It’s kind of funny when I was a college kid I didn’t think this was where I was gonna be down the road. I started studying Biology/Biopsychology in college. But after a few years I realized I wouldn’t be happy going down that road. So I dropped out with little idea of what to do next.

I always loved theater, so I started doing that. For awhile I thought I would work in the theater world, but then I was introduced to the world of voice acting. And funny enough that’s where I started to learn more about the tech side of productions: microphones, recording, and editing.

And after a year or so practicing voice acting, a few fellow creatives persuaded me to move to Los Angeles with them. They ended up not coming, but I pressed on.

While I enjoyed voice acting and theater, I wasn’t always a fan of the project I was in. So with the help of a few friends we started making our own stuff. I ended up spear-headed the projects, and I realized I really liked producing. There’s this wide picture you have to see that includes money, time, people, and the creative intent. And it was a lot of fun of juggling priorities to make a project come to life.

I did at one point have to leave Los Angeles: my car was stolen, my roommates were kicking me out for honestly the silliest thing, I had just been dumped, and my job had cut my hours in half. So feeling a little defeated I went back to my family.

However I didn’t quit, I spent a little time saving money back up and perfecting my craft. After some time I came back to Los Angeles, and started Determinal Velocity almost a year afterwards.

It’s been about a year since Determinal Velocity was made, and I honestly wasn’t super sure how it was gonna go. But I wanted to try. So I, and the team I hired produced one short film that’s currently being submitted to a variety of film festivals.

Amongst the making of that short film I heard about the “Seneca Women to Hear: The Search for the Next Great Female Podcasters Competition.” It’s a mouthful I know, but the winners received $3,000, and I was looking for funding for the short film. So I submitted a proposal, and I won!

At the time I just took the money and focused back on the short film, but after a few months I was reached out to by Seneca Women, and iHeartMedia. They asked me if I wanted to produce the podcast that I proposed to them for the competition, so I said yes!

And that’s where I’m at now, my podcast is set to release in August of 2023. It’s called “Ace of Hearts: a dating podcast from every perspective.” A show that hears about dating experiences from all sexual orientations, gender identities, mental disorders, physical disabilities, races, religions, ages, and more!

It’s been an incredible journey so far, but I owe it all to trying new things, and not giving up. It’s advice I can’t stop giving to my fellow creatives and business peeps: put yourself out there, try new things, and when they don’t go the way you expect, learn from the mistakes and try again.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If money wasn’t an issue here’s what I would do for a week.

Sunday: We visit little Tokyo, get some sushi at KURA the revolving sushi bar.

Monday: BEACH DAY, I’m partial to Redondo Beach myself. We’d get some lunch from the taco trucks nearby!

Tuesday: I would take them to Hollywood, do a few of the tourist things to do there. We would do an escape room at the Escape Hotel Hollywood, I used to work there!

Wednesday: I would take my friend hiking on one of the amazing trails, I’m a fan of Tree People, it’s gorgeous!

Thursday: Gotta go to the Griffith Observatory, and see if we can catch a show!

Friday: There’s plenty of comedy places you can check out, I’ve been to the Laugh Factory several times.

Saturday: If they have a preference to a certain live show, I would get some tickets to be an audience member at the Kelly Clarkson show or something else if they prefer.

When you get the chance get some Poke! It’s something that I never had on the east coast, and it’s always amazing in Los Angeles.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am so grateful for my family and friends who’ve had my back during this journey, and the support for when things sometimes fall apart.

And I’m thankful for iHeartMedia for taking me on their team when I didn’t have many credits to my name.
