We had the good fortune of connecting with MADSN and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MADSN, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic career because, for as long as I can remember, I have always had a passion for music. Growing up, I would write songs at recess and put on shows for my family. Now at 23, I still have that childlike joy and love for music. It’s been one of the few consistent aspects of my life that I can always count on. The feeling of taking an experience and making something beautiful out of it to share with people is, to me, the best feeling in the world. And despite all the challenges it may bring to be in a creative field, I still choose every day to pursue a career in music. I believe that we don’t get to choose what passions find us, but we choose whether or not to follow them. I have decided to follow my heart and it has led me to music.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I think the honesty in my lyrics and the passion in my performances is what is most distinctive about my music. I always strive to make a new song or show better than the last one. Whether it’s more honest and descriptive writing or a more engaging performance, I always want to continue to grow and improve. Every day I make an effort to do at least one thing that will help me get better. It could be writing a new song, working on a new vocal run, or really anything that challenges me musically.

However, I will recognize it is not all my own doing to be where I am today professionally. I got here through not only hard work, but also because of some amazing people. My mom put me in voice lessons at a young age and encouraged me to follow my dreams. My dad has supported me in so many ways to be the best I can be. I’ve had choir teachers that believed in me and gave me opportunities to perform. And I’ve had beautiful friends around me always there to cheer me on. It hasn’t been easy, but because of these people, I have been able to overcome the challenges I have faced and still choose to pursue music.

I’ve learned to listen to what other people say. I know we’re always told not to, to be independent and not care what anyone has to say about what you’re doing, but to some extent I think we should. I don’t mean to listen when other are putting you down or don’t believe in you. I mean listen more than you speak. There is so much to learn from other people, especially in a creative field. I recognize that I am making music not only for myself but for people to relate to and feel something from. Certainly their opinions should matter to me. I also love to listen to their stories. Everyone is so unique and interesting and there’s always something to learn from others.

I want the world to know that I will always be authentically myself. For much of my life I feel like I wasn’t always honest with who I am. I was trying so hard to fit into a mold that wasn’t made for me instead of embracing who I truly was. Now, with my experiences and the support of my family and friends, I am so excited to show the world the real me through my music.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely at the top of my list would be Hamburger Mary’s. That place holds so many good memories for me and there’s never a dull moment. As for food you would find us at Laurel Hardware or Malibu Farms for sure, amazing food and beautiful atmosphere. For some entertainment, we’d have to see a Breaking Sound show at Adults Only, the first venue I played in LA, or The Hotel Cafe for Jesse and Friends. You are always guaranteed to find new artists you’ll love there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout my mom for always being my number one fan and supporter.
