Meet Magdala Charles | Fine Art, Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Magdala Charles and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Magdala, how do you think about risk?
Every risk comes with a sacrifice. Every risk also comes with fear. That’s why people are afraid to take them. When I took the risk to discontinue my law school entry process, I knew that I was taking a big risk. I relied on faith, which I still do. If i did not take the risk to accept my talent as a way to live for the rest of my life I would not have been a thriving artist I am today. Risk has given me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone, it has given me the drive to find my true passion , it has also given me the blessing of finding my true self. Today I encourage everyone to do the same, take risks, challenge yourself to see and do better.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My bold and passionate work reflects an abundant dimension of my experiences such as; Haitian culture, and feminism. I work with acrylic on canvas, my passion begins with creating contemporary art for this young generation for them to relate and appreciate fine art in a world where everything is about technology. My mission is to continue to use myself made brand to support students in Haiti to receive a great education through the arts, hoping one day to open an art school.
I am most proud of where I am today. I am happy that I accepted this path, living in it and cant wait to see how God unfolds and opens new doors for me. I
I got to where I am today because I had people , friends and others that believed in me. Every opportunity they saw that fit me and that I would be a match for they informed me. I also took every opportunity that was thrown at me and I went for each and every one of them.
This journey is definitely not easy and I don’t think it get easier, because everyday I want more for myself, every day it requires for me to work harder. I do it alone, I do it scared and sometimes I even do it broke. For you to support your career you need to have money. You need to have balance and discipline and these things don’t come easy at all. I have stumbled many blocks, many trials, many problems and I’ve only dealt with them all just on my own and my belief in God. But off course I do hope it get easier, because no one owes me anything but myself.
I want the world to know that I am a fighter. that all good things don’t come easy, as an artist you don’t really see many people like myself who share their personal beliefs or thoughts, because people don’t see us as a professional or a business. They think we are these weird people that paint and that’s it. It is honestly truly ten times harder for us, especially as a new artist. When it comes to my brand I want the world to know that it took a village, I’ve dealt with so much people from my past who have helped me with my brand, from friends since high school , even strangers. Don’t be too independent that you wont ask for help and don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are people around you have the tools and the power to help you!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Currently I live in Miami so my favorite spots to hang out when my friends want to hangout we go to Bistro Café, Victory Miami, Tap 42, mAYAMEE. I always like to take my friends don on Wynwood , just because DUH! the art scenery or ask them to go to a museum with me. Sometimes we just stop in midtown or down town Miami and go to a random spot. Other than that we might go to a party at Truth lounge or CHWA ( Haitian clubs).
The most interesting thing I’ve one so far was trapeze, very exciting. I don’t really y have much friends down here in Miami so I don’t really go out and explore the city as much as I should. but it is a beautiful and exciting city, much calmer than NYC. But I’ll always love the city life, I cant live in places where’s things are not busy.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I do have a lot of people that support me and motivate me everyday. But no one or anything pushes me to do better like the Steve Harvey morning podcast. Steve Harvey was someone I would watch on TV when I flip the channel for a few seconds. But his morning radio show has been helping me each and every morning. Steve does not only motivate but he has this way of connecting faith and the trust in God in every level of your life. I’m also inspired but his stories and how he touches people to be their best. Steve talks about real life situations, things that real people go through and he has a way of motivating you out of your current state of mind to do better and go after the best for yourself. I look up to him as a mentor, like a supportive family member. I encourage everyone to download or stream the podcast. It’s truly amazing for self growth and self realization and encouragement. ‘ Steve Harvey Got a radio show, aww man”.
