Meet Malia Carvalho | Tantric Transformation Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Malia Carvalho and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business? It has been a wild ride! My spiritual journey began with transitioning from mostly vegetarian to completely plant based in 2009. It was then when I became deeply connected with my surroundings, my sourcing, the mind-body-spirit connection and my relationship with nature. In 2011 I began my therapeutic bodywork career and an avid personal yoga practice. After I experienced my first plant medicine ceremony in January 2016, my entire life transformed and my career and lifestyle began to open its petals and blossom. I was inspired to undergo yoga teacher training, Ashley Turner’s yoga psychology program, the Being True to You Addiction and Recovery and Psychedelic Integration coaching program, develop a beloved Kundalini yoga practice, study and practice both the Eastern and Western tantric traditions and learn multiple musical instruments and find my authentic voice. What began as a basic therapeutic massage practice, developed into guiding seekers in becoming embodied, connecting more deeply with themselves and their partners, integrating peak experiences and providing a safe and supportive space for these beautiful souls to cry, laugh, melt, receive, shine and transform.
Observing the transformation in my own life through ceremony, yoga, music and coaching is how I arrived at being filled with the passion of guiding others on their own unique journeys. The process of bringing the dark corners of the mind to light is not easy! Sometimes as light is shed, resistance arises and the urge to look away which ultimately brings more suffering. Although of course there are temporary alleviations to distract us from this such as screen time, substances and over-indulging, it is only when we are able to take a deep breath, relax the body, accept and surrender, drop into forgiveness of the self…and deeply know that it is really ok…just listen.
There are chapters to the experience and unlike a book, they are not mapped out in linear form. Healing is cyclical. I would describe it in this visual: imagine a kid in a skate park, circling around the jumps on a skateboard. She goes around and around, sometimes she lands those jumps and makes it around again and again- she’s confident, she’s having fun and she’s flying. She then clips one of the jumps and falls and scrapes and bruises her knee, maybe even breaks her arm. She heals, she mends and then she comes back and she continues her practice and flies once again. With more practice, she completes more circles, but she will always fall here and there and that is ok, that is life…and she is there for it. We are here for it. When you experience a sacred transformation, you recognize the beauty you see in the world is the beauty you see in yourself…and no it’s not always rainbows, dancing goddesses and winged seraphs…but embracing the spectrum of experiences from painful to blissful leads to truth. And truth is love. It is my absolute pleasure and calling in life to guide seekers in experiencing the fullest, most loving expression of themselves in living an authentic, tantric life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In the beginning, the thought process was rather to let go of thought and order and drop into observation and vision. Much of the time us humans like to chart out all the logical steps of what we are going to do before we have even dreamed of the big picture! In Alice in Wonderland the Cheshire cat asks Alice which way she is going, to which she states “I don’t know”, and the cat replies, “Well, then it doesn’t really matter.” In my case, my journey through my own healing path through plant medicine, various guides, yogic practices and connecting deeply with music painted my vision of collecting all of these modalities and guiding individuals in living an authentic, embodied, tantric life. Once the vision was clear in the mind’s eye, I could then turn to the planning, charting side of the brain to develop the steps it would take to manifest this type of transformational guidance into practice.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would go eat brunch at Sage Organic Vegan Bistro in Culver City, I would take them to Getty Villa in the afternoon and while I was in the area I would visit Lake Shrine Self-Realization Fellowship and watch the sunset at the beach in Malibu. That day I would grab dinner at Malibu Farms on the water.
Another day I would hike Griffith Park near the old zoo animal cages and the old carousel- it’s perfectly creepy and beautiful. In the summer I would take them to a production of Shakespeare’s A Mid Summer Night’s Dream at Will Geer’s Outdoor Theater. If we wanted a casual bite I would take them to Topanga Living Cafe or if we wanted something more experiential I would take them to the magical fairy garden restaurant Inn of the Seventh Ray in Topanga – that’s where I got married on the summer solstice of 2022!
A little further down the map, I would take them to meditation studio and crystal shop Hallowed Ground in Marina del Rey for a breathwork Soundbath with Gianni on a Saturday. In the Southbay, I would take them to Pura Vita restaurant in Redondo Beach (also located in West Hollywood) for the most delicious plant-based Italian food and organic wine. I would take them to the Whale Museum in Palos Verdes for a little whale history and whale watching (December-May). We would check out one of the ocean view hiking trails over that way and perhaps relax at the spa pool and have lunch at Terranea Resort. I would treat them to a Signature Southbay Mermaid session at Mermaid Massage Southbay, which includes a dry brush, homemade organic sea salt and honey scrub, an infrared sauna wrap and soundbath and custom massage all in one!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so many people, forces and organizations to thank. I will thank the guidance of the soul vine and everyone who has mentored me along the journey.
