We had the good fortune of connecting with Manami Moriyama and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Manami, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I’d keep going if I have a vision and the process of achieving it gives me a good feeling. Although it might not be easy, I believe the process should generally feel exciting when your are working towards something. Of course there may be some obstacles, but even that becomes your learning opportunity and you’d overcome when you have a vision and trying to achieve something.
I think it’s the sign to give up is when you don’t trust yourself with the process. Nothing is ever easy, but if I don’t trust myself going through the hard part to achieve something, I consider giving it up.
Another sign would be taking too much time achieving it. I usually have rough timeline of the process when I work, and I know it doesn’t always work the I want. However if it’s taking way too long and I cannot figure out the way to process faster, I take it as a sign and move on to something else.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I work full time as a technical designer at a NY based fashion company.
Technical designer focus on engineering aspect of garment – fit, construction, measurement, material quality etc…
I’ve been lucky to work with a few legendary designers in NY. I’ve learned different styles of design and construction, now I oversee several categories on my own.
I’m still learning every day as fashion moves forward. Every season we have new look and styles, so it’s my job to make sure everything is functional and comfortable to wear while looking great. I believe it’s important for me to stay curios and learning not just from new, but also from old. I learn new styles every season as well as technologies to improve my productivity, but I also take references from great vintage pieces.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I actually took my friend around in NY earlier this year. She visited me from Japan so I wanted her to make the most out of her stay, Here are some places we went:

Shops: Dimes square and China town under the bridge, SOHO, Dumbo

Activities: Broadway, Moma, The Met

Food/Drinks: Bubby’s, Thai Diner, Au Cheval, Emily

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to all my friends!
I’ve made this far because of their friendship and support. I truly couldn’t make it alone.

To my friends from home who grew up together and still calls me friend from far.
To my friends from college who’s been through many things together.
To my friends from work who taught me not just work skills but also about life.
And of course, to my family for always believing in me!
