We had the good fortune of connecting with Mandy Adams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mandy, why did you pursue a creative career?
I knew from a young age – like 7 or 8 – that I wanted to do something in the design field. That’s when I started drawing up floor plans of my parent’s home reworking the size of my room by expanding the house into the backyard and overlooking a new pool, of course. Wishful thinking at the time but hey a girl can dream, right?! And dream I did until I turned it into a reality 20+ years ago when i started my interior design career after graduating with a BFA in interior design. I started in commercial interiors, working on projects all over the country then continued my design career after moving to Boston and New York City then back to LA in the early 2000’s. I now focus mainly on residential interiors but my commercial background definitely comes in handy when technical challenges come up on my projects. My love for design has stayed with me all these years and can’t ever imagine my life without it.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started Amanda Adams Design in 2016 with small residential projects for friends and family and pretty quickly I started taking on bigger and bigger projects including new construction projects and major renovations. I also do full home furnishing projects and I’m always up for a challenge so I pretty much take anything on that comes my way! I have completed projects in LA as well as in other areas around the country. Even though my adopted home is LA. I’ve been told my Southern roots and warm personality shine through in how I work with my clients. I strive to create spaces that reflect my client’s personalities while remaining comfortable, functional and beautiful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in the Southbay so I’d start by enjoying the day at Terranea! We could get a day pass for some pool time, message at the spa and dinner at Marcel overlooking the ocean. Next up I’d head to the heart of the city and go to Beverly Hills for some shopping and lunch at the rooftop at the Beverly Hilton and dinner at Dante down the street, both with great views for visitors to admire. Day tripping in Malibu is always fun especially when we have time for El Matador beach with those beautiful rock formations. Finally I’d round out the week at one of my favorite hiking spots in the Palisades, again with views for days!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents have always been very supportive of my interests and always encouraged me to explore things I was passionate about when I was growing up, Another person who I credit my success to is my husband. We have been together as long as I’ve had my design career and he encouraged me early on to go for what I wanted and helped me realize all the hard work I put in would definitely pay off. He was there to support me when I felt discouraged and at times when I didn’t think I was good enough. Now 20+ years later, we still talk about those early days and I still appreciate how much his love and support helped me get through some tough times. He was so right, the long hours and some tears along the way helped to shape my work ethic and made me a better designer.
