We had the good fortune of connecting with Mandy Palasik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mandy, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing about my industry that outsiders are probably unaware of is what an Architect actually does. So I thought I could shed some light on that from the perspective of my practice and approach. Caveat that not all architects are the same, nor is there a one-size-fits all approach to design. Searching for the right architect is much like dating; it’s about finding someone who not only understands your vision but elevates it.

Beyond the Hollywood portrayal of architects as lone masterminds crafting iconic works, the reality is far more complex, collaborative, and deeply human. Architecture is more than designing buildings. In my practice, we are storytellers, collaborators, and advocates for our clients’ visions. We design custom homes, furniture, outdoor spaces, inflatable installations, public gathering spaces – and everything in between. Our role is deeply rooted in understanding people—how they live, work, and interact with their surroundings—and translating those insights into spaces that are not only functional but authentic and meaningful.

As such, creativity and collaboration are at the core of our work. The success of a project relies heavily on teamwork. Architects don’t work in isolation; we partner with engineers, landscape architects, interior designers, contractors, and many other skilled professionals. I deeply respect the craft and knowledge that contractors bring; they are the ones who bring our visions to life, turning drawings into reality. Their skill can make or break a project, and when there’s passion and craftsmanship on site, it’s magic.

Being an architect also means carrying a profound responsibility—to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. We undergo rigorous continuing education, thousands of hours of professional training experience, and several (3-hour long) licensing exams that test our knowledge and commitment to the field. Our work may seem very blue skies on the surface, but we are meticulously thinking through (and often losing sleep over) every detail of a project – from how natural light impacts the experience of a space to the environmental impact and tactile experience of material selections. The practice of architecture is truly a balance of science and art. All those thoughtfully vetted details make a big impact on a project.

In my practice, I’ve even found myself as a mediator or counselor, navigating the emotional landscape of clients’ big life decisions. Designing someone’s forever home or a community space that will shape public life is an incredible honor. We wear many hats, guiding our clients through every step of the design, permitting, and construction process. It’s not just about creating something beautiful; it’s about making a space that truly reflects who they are and what they value.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mandy Palasik Studio is a full-service architecture and design firm based in downtown Los Angeles. Our work exists at the intersection of art, architecture, and community. Built on the belief that design is not a linear process and creativity knows no borders, our work manifests in various scales and formations ranging from custom homes to public art. We seek to create spaces that celebrate the art of everyday living, inspire excitement in the mundane, and evoke beauty in simplicity. For us, architecture is not just a technical discipline but an inclusive and collaborative art form.
Our practice begins with a deep understanding of the people and places involved in each project. We dive into the identities, needs, and aspirations of our clients to create spaces that truly resonate with those who inhabit them. This commitment to authenticity and connection means that no two projects are alike; instead, each design evolves uniquely with our clients, challenging us to explore new materials, applications, and techniques. It’s this continuous process of experimentation and collaboration that keeps us inspired and allows us to push creative boundaries.
I’m incredibly proud of the breadth of work we’ve undertaken and the synergies we’ve fostered between public art and architecture. Early in my career, I struggled to find opportunities that would allow me to leverage my passions for both disciplines. The conventional practice of architecture has often been driven by a quest to be iconic, defined by stylistic bravado and, at times, overshadowed by ego. As a woman working in renowned design firms across the country, I’ve witnessed this first-hand. I realized that successful design brings value through a genuine connection with the user and site – through collaboration. It has the power to positively transform lives and entire communities.
This realization fueled my desire to create Mandy Palasik Studio—a place where art and architecture coalesce to empower others. I took a leap of faith to forge my own path, and I am grateful every day to work with clients, both public and private, who recognize and value our creative approach. Our work is about more than just beautiful spaces; it’s about creating meaningful connections and lasting impact.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would definitely nerd out by touring LA’s architectural gems, starting with the classic Googies – LAX’s Theme Building followed by lunch at Pann’s (by female architect Helen Liu Fong). Pierre Koenig’s Stahl House (aka Case Study House #22), Eames House and Foundation in Pacific Palisades, Schindler House West Hollywood, and The Watts Towers would also be on the list. I’d reserve some downtown off the freeway with a relaxing sunset picnic in San Pedro’s Point Fermin Park overlooking the Pacific. I’ve recently learned of William Mellenthin’s signature “Birdhouse ranch” homes – which feature birdhouses or “dovecotes” built into the roof, among other quant features like diamond pane windows and colorful board-and-batten siding. It’s become kind of an obsession to look for these everywhere I go and there are a few good ones in the Coastal San Pedro neighborhood – as well as the occasional rogue peacock sighting that is always a delight.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to my favorite Architect, Luis Barragán, for continuing to inspire my work and push my creativity. His play with light and color is extraordinary. He even has his own signature pink tone. He was a true artist and architect whose designs remain timeless and highly influential to this day.
Coincidentally we both share the same birthday – shoutout to the Pisces rocking the creative world!
