Meet Manolo Langis | Architectural Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Manolo Langis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Manolo, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
While working as an architect, I was also involved in the visual aspect of project presentations, showing the vision of a home through my strengths of 3D and graphics. As I always had a camera in my back pocket, I slowly transitioned to architectural photography, merging all my talents in a more artistic manner.
The skills I needed to present the vision of a project then and photographing projects now are quite similar.
Honing my skills as a photographer through the eye of an architect, gave me an edge on how I captured projects. This naturally kept me connected to the community I have been working with for the past 20 years.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My first big move was to leave Montreal, Canada right after graduating with an Architectural degree, and to start from scratch in Los Angeles, knowing that leaving my comfort zone would only increase my opportunities for success.
While working for the architecture firm KAA Design Group for 12 years, I developed a keen eye for design and a great sense of space. As I study spaces to shoot, I spend careful attention to how natural light moves within a space to highlight architecture and interiors with its most enticing facets.
As a photographer, I go the extra mile to get the shot. Whether it is walking on building edges, climbing/hanging from tree branches, flying in a helicopter without doors, hiking up mountains/canyons before sunrise, there are no boundaries.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
California is full of gems, from one of US’s highest mountain peaks (Mammoth area) to the lowest elevation (Death Valley). Visiting both within a day is quite thrilling. Some of my favorites places to escape are Joshua Tree and Anza Borrego’s Badlands. I would build a fire from firewood and cook some marinated foods with herbs from my garden. Mandatory Beach lunch at least once a week, and definitely doing a drive along the California beach coast as often as possible.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Grant Kirkpatrick, founder of KAA Design Group, gave me a lot of artistic freedom and support throughout my architectural career, which influences my photography approach.
