We had the good fortune of connecting with Maranova and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maranova, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
So, cool story actually. I was born in Cheremkhovo, Russia, and at 18 months was adopted and raised by Italian-American parents in New Jersey. The varying cultural influences I experienced growing up have greatly impacted my artistic vision and the themes I explore as an artist. I have always been fascinated by how music can evoke emotion and connect people across different backgrounds and walks of life. For me especially, there was always this part of me that wanted to explore my roots and where I’ve come from, but its easy to get caught up in life and not appreciate all it took to get to the place I am and where I want to be. So to make sure I never forget it, I took my birth surname is my artist name, Maranova. To remind myself that there is a strength in having a story.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Living in a small town in New Jersey didn’t have many opportunities for dreamers such as myself, so I went to a place that did, Los Angeles. It was difficult at first, not only to adjust, but to find my place and where exactly I wanted to be. I’d never lived on my own before and to say it was scary is a mild term. But I let myself live for me, for the first time in my life, and I discovered a side of myself I never knew existed. I met incredible people that helped me to harness all the ambition and creative energy I possessed and form into something that made me happy. One of the thing I love most about art is how it touches people in different ways. While we may all the hearing the same song, it will never mean exactly the same thing for any two people. Art brings out the uniqueness in people in a way nothing else can. It’s what attracts me and drives me to make the music that I do. Music that people can feel and understand because, despite differences in culture and language, music speaks when words fail.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Everywhere you go in LA, there’s creativity, in both the spaces and the people in it. Any place that I can go to connect with other artists or creatives, I’m there. I love places like Hotel Cafe, where there’s tons of great music artist showcases. Also I would definitely take them to see a concert. The first live show I attended in LA was at The Troubadour, so it’s a must see ! LA is one of the most beautiful places to live. The sunsets are spectacular and its beaches are incredible. Also has some of the best food places for any kind of vibe. I love rooftop bars and restaurants, so places like the Highlight Room and Bar Lis are perfect !

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve had a lot of people tell me what I do is, and I quote, “silly” or “superficial”. I get the old “isn’t there a ‘regular job’ you could get ?” a lot. And I understand it. It’s not the most conventional lifestyle. But it is the one that allows me to do what I love everyday and meet a ton of creatively cool people and live incredible experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise. So to all those cool people, and to the people who stand by me and support me in even the smallest of ways, I thank you. And to my family, both found and formed, I love you and you inspire me everyday to be the best artist and person I can be.
