We had the good fortune of connecting with Marc Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marc, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Music has always been a subject and focus that’s drawn me in. Before music, I didn’t have much drive to do anything with my life. When I was in high school I didn’t even want to apply to any college and just assumed I’d get some random job after graduating. I really am thankful for being a musician as it’s allowed myself to find my voice, further develop as a human and artist, and connect with others in ways I didn’t know were possible before.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me and my craft apart from other musicians is I’m on a mission to break down walls and barriers that have been established through out of date pedagogy and practices. I treat my music like a signal or a message that’s trying to be sent out for all to hear, and I hope that someone gets something out of that. I have so many influences that make me who I am and I think my music reflects that as well. I’m not just based in jazz, or any other genre. It really is a blend, at least to me. Even today, I still struggle in my journey as an artist, and I think my music reflects that struggle in a sense. Im extremely unapologetic in who I am and for better or for worse I don’t think that’ll change because the music I exist in is meant to be an inspiration for those who feel their voice Is silenced, so that they can break free as well.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many vibrant music scenes and venues in L.A. Some of my favorite venues include places with a great Jazz scene, like Mr. Music Head Gallery, ETA, or Sam First, to name a few. There is always something happening all around L.A. for live music.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many influential and inspiring people who have helped me throughout the years as I’ve developed as a musician and been blessed with many opportunities, but I would say the person I can credit in helping me build the strength and spirit needed to never give music up is my mentor, James Newton. Not only is he an acclaimed flutist, improviser & composer, but he is also an amazing educator and he gave me the encouragement to continue with music. He made it clear that someone like myself who has always had to fight for an opportunity deserved to be on equal standing like everyone else. Another person who deserves credit is my older brother, Manuel J. Perez III. Although we started in totally different musical worlds, we’ve encouraged each other throughout the years and have made sure to pick each other up when one of us falls.
