We had the good fortune of connecting with Marco Dapper and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marco, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Well as a self employed artist, one has to be ok with the ebbs and flows of productivity. we are at the mercy of many different variables since it’s not a steady flow of income. Sometimes it will be 6 months of nonstop work, but then it can become quiet for a long period of time. I like to believe that the quiet times in my productivity aren’t a negative thing but a positive one given to me by the universe. To balance me. So instead of worrying and dwelling, I go on a vacation or focus on some other part of my life. Such as physical or mental health. Gives time to check in with yourself.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think my art is just an extension of me. So that by definition is what sets it apart. I don’t think anything is truly “easy.” But I love it so it feels that way. I have been painting since 2007 and I definitely have evolved over the years. The biggest lesson I have learned over the years is that there will always be someone “better”than you. But art isn’t about making that straight A. It’s about being vulnerable and having a specific point of view. That’s what matters the most. You see so many talented artists, musicians, actors etc. and if they do not have a specific point of view, then it’s not felt, or heard. Humans need art because it reminds them that they aren’t alone on this crazy journey called the human experience.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow so many to list. I’m the kid of guy who hangs out in all areas of Los Angeles. Would definitely go see some live music. Love the Greek or ford amphitheaters in the summer. Palladium and the Fonda are legendary as well. I have been goin to El Compadre in Hollywood since I moved here in 2003. For many and myself included it’s a little slice of home for me. But also I love Scopa on the west side.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Too many to really list but I will say my family. They have always believed in me. My grandmothers because both painted and I saw the love of painting at an early age. My father because he painted automobiles for a living. Had to show him that he is an artist too. Matching paint by eye is a skill that many don’t posses. My mother because she has always been so creative. My sister because she always fought for me.
