We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Villagomez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maria, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Often, people would ask me to translate documents for them and/or interpret for them from either English to Spanish or Spanish to English. Rarely, did anyone offer to compensate me for those services. Later in life, I discovered that I possessed valuable skills that deserved compensation. I was underestimating the value of my bilingual speaking and writing skills and my ability to interpret and translate. I discovered my skills and ability and decided to launch my business to offer those services in exchange for monetary compensation. I identified the demand and realized I had the supply to offer those services. So I decided to launch my business.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Overcoming life and professional challenges is never easy. To do so, one must be disciplined and have an incredible work ethic. Thinking big helps, but not if we do not have a plan. We must set goals and be thorough with a plan that is realistic. One must be organized and committed to reaching one’s goals. I am extremely proud of where my business idea has led me. Because I launched the business, I was hired by NBC Universal to be the Spanish Consultant to Nina’s World, Sprout channel original bilingual show. What I have learned is that one must be able to see where supply can meet demand and if one possesses skills that can serve others, one must take advantage of that opportunity and run with it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them all over California. I would visit Santa Barbara and have lunch by the beach and I would take them to the Napa Valley for a wine tasting at one of our Latino wineries where the service is familiar and welcoming.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Certainly, my grandmother taught me that life is full of challenges and that one must be prepared to navigate through life by reaching independence and not relying on anyone else for my success or my failures.
