We had the good fortune of connecting with Mario Rangel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mario, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

My deep love for being a part of the creation of stories and characters, as well as the potential for films to deeply impact and change individuals and society, motivated me to follow my dream of becoming a director. I see film as an art form that reflects everyday society worldwide and considers it an extension of reality, not just entertainment. This belief in the power of film as a medium for storytelling and reflection of the human experience inspired me to leap into filmmaking.

My journey led me to become a director and explore the post-production side as an editor and colorist. I believe that dedication, sacrifice, and the pursuit of one’s dreams are essential to achieving success in any artistic or creative career. My passion for storytelling drove my career shift from business to filmmaking through film and my desire to fulfill a childhood dream.

I continue to be open to new ideas, cultures, people, arts, and experiences. As a filmmaker, my goal is to create films that deeply impact and inspire audiences while reflecting human society’s diverse and complex nature.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I pursued filmmaking because it had always been my childhood dream. From a young age, I was captivated by the experience of watching movies on the big screen, and as I grew up, that dream of becoming a film director never faded. Despite initially pursuing a degree in Business Engineering and running a successful alpaca clothing brand, I couldn’t ignore my true passion for storytelling through film.

I made the courageous decision to leave my job and find a way to enter the film industry. I started my journey by working as an executive production assistant at Peru’s largest film studio, Señor Z, gaining valuable experience in the world of filmmaking. Later, I decided to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production from Full Sail University, where I could further hone my filmmaking skills.

It hasn’t been an easy journey, it was very demanding and challenging. Nonetheless, it’s what I want for me and me future in life. I wouldn’t change it for anything.

Currently, I’m part of the of Deisi Del Toro Productions, under the direction of owner Deisi Del Toro, a relative of famous film director Guillermo Del Toro. As a certified Davinci Resolve colorist, I serve currently as supervising editor and colorist on two feature films, “Melt On This” and “Melt On This Music”. The former is now available on Amazon Prime Video and several other platforms. In addition, I take on the role of day-to-day production manager at the studio.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, I’m from Lima, Peru. So I would have an extensive list of Peruvian restaurants where they can eat the best food in the world. They can go to visit the historic downtown of Lima and hop on the tour bus, called “Mirabus”, to go through a historic and cultural tour around Lima. Now, I’ve been living in Winter Park, Florida, for over one year and a half so I would recommend that my friend go to Park Avenue, Baldwin Park, and the Enzian Theatre.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I want to dedicate my success to my family. To my parents, Lali and Mario, and my sister, Maria Laura, they have always supported me in whatever I wanted to do. Even if I felt like they didn’t, they were always there helping me chase my dreams. And they still are, present all back from Lima, Peru. I missed them a lot.

To my cousins, uncles, and grandparents on my mom’s and dad’s side, who have always been a great family, always together.

To my best friends from school and university. They have been always present in my childhood and now, in adulthood. Always sharing my passion of film with them. If they see this, they know who they are. Amazing friends that you can always count on, at any time.

And finally, to my girlfriend, Natalia. She has accompanied me on this journey these last two years, through happy and sad, through easy and difficult moments. Always by my side.
