Meet Mario Romano | Designer, Inventor, Business Leader

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mario Romano and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mario, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
With a vision to revolutionize the tile industry, I set out to introduce a disruptive and innovative solution known as M|R Walls. The core concept was to bridge the gap between computer-aided design and digital fabrication, pushing the boundaries of design language for wall surfaces and unlocking new horizons for the artistic potential of tile and stone. I was determined to break free from the constraints of traditional tile formats, and instead create a constructible solution that would empower architects and designers to unleash their creativity with ease of installation being a key focus. My ultimate goal was to make M|R Walls not only cutting-edge in design, but also highly practical in implementation, inspiring a new era of limitless possibilities in the world of wall surfacing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My driving force has always been creativity, but I’ve come to understand that creativity alone is not enough to run a successful business. In fact, business and creativity can often clash. What I’ve learned, and what I hope others can learn, is to harness the power of creativity to create something of value for others. By directing this creative force towards creating something that benefits others, we can open doors to new opportunities and freedom. Looking back at my own success, I realize that it wasn’t just what I did, but also what I didn’t do. The path to success is paved with saying no to convention, the obvious, and the well-known road.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles was a new experience for her. I suggested that she take a stroll along the Venice Beach boardwalk, indulge in a cup of coffee on Abbey Kinney, and embark on a bike ride along the stunning Southern California shoreline. Additionally, I recommended that she visit Disneyland and California Adventure, and if possible, stay at the hotel in order to take advantage of the magical mornings. The first hour at Disneyland is truly unforgettable. And if you like museums, visit the Getty.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to extend my appreciation to some of my greatest inspirations in the field of architecture. From the visionary designs of Zaha Hadid to the innovative works of Ross Lovegrove, the groundbreaking genius of Antoni Gaudi, and the timeless artistry of Leonardo Da Vinci, each of these architects has redefined the very essence of architecture and left an indelible mark on the built environment.
