We had the good fortune of connecting with Marisa Rios and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marisa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had been in the beauty industry for seven years when I decided to start my own business. At the time, I was working at a popular salon doing brows, eyelash extensions and makeup. Although I loved my job I began to feel complacent. Work was consistent and predictable but I didn’t feel challenged. I knew there were different aspects of the beauty industry I had yet to explore as well. The prospect of venturing out on my own as an independent brow & makeup artist was intimidating but I knew that’s what I needed to do to find what was missing in my career. After much thought and careful preparation, I decided to take the plunge. That’s how For the Love of Brows came to be!

What should our readers know about your business?
What sets me apart from other professionals is my intention. I’m not just trying to sell a service. My intention is to give my clients an experience that changes the way they see themselves. It’s a mission I’m very proud of! I’m also proud that I’ve never stopped learning and growing. I’m a firm believer in always being a student to my craft. Time, consistent effort and continuously seeking education are what got me to where I am today. It hasn’t been easy. Staying disciplined and holding myself accountable have helped keep me on a good path. To anyone just getting started, understand that you’re going to encounter critics and comparison. Don’t take anything personally! Focus less on what other people are doing and more on your own journey. Another lesson I’ve learned is to try to maintain a balance. There are many facets to running a business. If you focus too much on one thing you may be neglecting another critical piece of the puzzle. The piece of my work I’ve been most excited about lately is permanent makeup. When I first started studying PMU three years ago, the floodgates opened. It was literally a whole new world of skill I knew nothing about! Each procedure is tailored to each individual down to the most minute detail. That is my business model to a T. What I want the world to know about For the Love of Brows is that I have a natural, realistic approach to beauty and brows. At the end of the day I want to leave my client feeling like the best version of themselves.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First off, we would be doing a lot of eating! We have a great food scene here in Arizona and I love sharing my personal favorites with out-of-towners. I would kick off the week with a trip to Cotton & Copper. C & C is my favorite neighborhood spot for insanely good cocktails and unique bites. Knowing my friends, they’re likely in town for a concert so a trip to Crescent Ballroom or The Van Buren is inevitable. My favorite way to pre-game for a show is with a visit to Heritage Square. There you can grab a drink at Bar Bianco then go across the way to Nobuo or Pizzeria Bianco for some world class eats. Either way you can’t go wrong. In addition to some local sight seeing, I would try to pencil in a day trip to Boyce Thompson Arboretum. Boyce Thompson is the perfect destination if you want to get out into nature without going too far. Finally, a quick overnight trip to Cottonwood & Jerome would be a great way to finish out the week. Arizona’s small towns are part of what makes our desert special. These two in particular are only 20 minutes away from one another. They boast eclectic boutiques, seasonal events and fantastic local wine!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I attribute my success to my family 100%. I come from a family of entrepreneurs and creatives. The industrious spirit and artistic eye it takes for my business to thrive comes directly from them. Not only that but their love and support has always been a tremendous force in my life. My family is what keeps me going.
