We had the good fortune of connecting with Martina Robledo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Martina, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Creating art! Whether it be in front of the camera or behind it, I think expressing myself in a creative way is true happiness. I’m also happiest when I’m reading, learning about any given topic, writing in my journal, and being around the people that I value most.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’am an openly trans model. It all started with a google search. I found an all trans agency in LA. From there I was able to land an audition for a BIG AWARD show. Everyone that showed up to the audition was showing off with how much experience they had and here I was with absolutely no experience. Feeling like I bombed, I didn’t have my hopes up. A few days later I received a call from my agent to tell me that I booked the job. I became the first transgender grammy trophy presenter- in history! I received a shout out from Laverne Cox and I actually spoke to her before she went on stage. Sharing the stage with Adele when she won record of the year in 2017 was the highlight of the year. This was definitely not easy. At the time I was struggling with my personal life, undergoing mental, physical and spiritual abuse from someone I loved. The biggest lesson Ive learned from all of this is to keep working towards your dreams! Even if you have people telling you no, it only takes one yes to make it all come true. How we deal in the face of adversity is the best judgment in character.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA is a huge concrete jungle. I love nature so I would recommend going to either Griffith Park or Elysian Park to escape the crowded city vibes. I’m also vegan, so my ultimate favorite restaurant is Cruzers Pizza. They have the best vegan pizza and wings made from jackfruit- the whole menu is plant based! Sage is my second favorite for an all vegan restaurant in Silver lake. If you wander to LA with meat eatears try low boy in Silver lake or Burger Lounge. Hands down the best vegan burgers and they have real meat options too!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for my friends and family. Being in the LGBT community we often get to choose a second family. For a huge part of my life that’s exactly what I did. The terrible mistakes I wish I could erase and the most amazing serendipitous, raw moments that occur once in a life time- my friends witnessed it all first hand. When my family eventually came around and accepted me as their trans daughter/sister, I was able to see them in that light. Now I have the best support team to help me when I make mistakes, laugh when I’m in pain and keep me on my toes If I’m slacking off! I’m so lucky.
