We had the good fortune of connecting with Mason Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mason, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Los Angeles, California. I grew up in the Gardena, Hawthorne Area. My family is very important to me, they’re very important to me. My company is named after my grandfather; Ricardo Allen Wright. He passed away in 2019 but he was so LA to his core. He knew LA like the back of his hand, he worked for the City of Los Angeles for over 30 years. Los Angeles is home. We have always talked about how in my family you can’t walk around anywhere in LA without knowing at least one person whether it’s a friend or a family member you may not have seen in years. I began care-taking for my grandmother when my grandfather passed, my grandmother had a massive stroke years ago and never truly recovered. My mother instilled in me the value of helping out others when they’re in need; and to never give back selfishly. I went to Leuzinger High School where I started pursuing photography as a possible future career. My mom was a Basketball coach for almost 18 years and I knew that wasn’t the route for me, so I began taking pictures at all of the games. I went on to do college level photojournalism in my senior year of high school. After that, I just began working on making photography my career full-time from there on out. I just continued to keep going no matter what obstacle or disadvantage came my way.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My Company originally started around 2017, just doing street photography it was really a hobby for a while. In high school my photography teacher taught us more about the business aspect of things and that anything that can be critiqued will be critiqued. I think about that often so I try and make sure my actual photos are better than any edits; I want my photos to be so good I don’t have to edit anything. In 2019 I did a photoshoot at Sunken City, and submitted my photos to a photography competition hosted by Lil Wayne. I ended up winning on a photo that in my head I thought wasn’t my best because I genuinely loved it without the edits.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If we’re looking to hang out and just grab some food, we’re definitely hitting up Orleans and York and Sweet Red Peach in Inglewood for Dessert. Now, on the other hand if we’re going out to grab a drink or go party we’re gonna go to Joey’s, Cara Cara, Catch one or Elephanté. I love Downtown L.A. and Hollywood Blvd when it comes to taking pictures though. Even though people think it’s a little corny I love the Getty museum the Getty may be my happy place. I think I may wanna do a photo shoot there one day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I haven’t talked to my photography teacher in a while but I think he influenced Special Shoutout to My family for their continued support; My Grandmothers affectionately known as Nae Nae and Sweetie, My Sisters Tanae, Paris, Jazmin, Ma’ryiya and Tay, and last but not least my heart, my mom Coach Penny! I love you mom!
