We had the good fortune of connecting with Master Shake and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Master, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am from a small country town called Fountain Inn, SC “The 4-4”. Where I came from, its a very close nit family-esque community. I come from a long family of hustlers, men and women. Hell man, you gotta be hustler or have that same level of aptitude to make it out of that small town mentality. We were taught the value of being genuine towards one another and I know that might seem like some corny shit but its the most vital lesson I’ve ever learned in life. “The more genuine you are to person, the clearer you can see their methods. That’s the essence of doing business” my mother always said. I was able to channel that thinking process towards the networking side of the industry which opened an array of promising paths for me. Im still that same well-mannered southern boy at heart, that type of shit can carry you a long way over your talent.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is my music and fashion man. Its a reflection of my personal struggles and thats what sets is apart from others. We all go through the same internal problems as human beings but we interpret how to assess them all differently. The way I combat my problems head on is through the art of “not giving a fuck”. My music is meant to be a form of escapism and the subject matter is a coping mechanism that allows the listener to have a free state of mind. I always make a conscious effort to show my audience that when they can escape their problems and not care for a while through listening to the music, the problems in retrospect become way more insignificant. The art of ” not giving a fuck” doesn’t necessarily mean not caring. It means that if the person channels their energy towards your goals then the universe is gonna naturally workout your problems. Life and problems go hand-hand with each other like a perfect chemical balance. I’m just here as a musical reminder.

This concept of thinking has gotten myself further than I could possibly imagine. I’ve gotten told “no” plenty of times from plenty different people ( you get used to it) yet I never let it bother me. I continue to push forward through each rejection because it makes me stronger and more skillful. That mindset allows the universe to works it course and provide mental clarity. I know this may seem cliche but “hard work does alway pay off”. I am product of that sentiment. I want people to understand from my story that there isn’t some simple step by step guide to make it in this industry. Its a non linear path that can be created from focusing on your craft and not letting the subtle bull-shits of life consume you negatively. My career is only in the beginning stage and I’m already reaping the fruits of labor.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have friends from SC visit all the time so I usually stick to the same method. I try to show them things they can’t possibly see in SC like museums, landmarks, shopping districts etc. I always take them to The Getty and MOCA. The Getty has breath-taking historic art and a priceless view. The MOCA sheds a very keen light on the evolution of Contemporary Art. I definitely have to show them the Hollywood sign too, that’s always a given. The cool thing about LA is you can literally wing-it anywhere and meet some really cool people. I tend to hang around hidden gem areas like Studio City and Silver Lake.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I gotta shout out the fellow artists from my music group SWSS (WashCMX, Tsunami Emperor and WOAHitsBrock). Them cats are the reason i’m still chasing a bag to this today. We got so much healthy competition going on between us man which consistently makes us better as an overall group. We’ve been knowing each other since 8th grade so that inherit chemistry is already there. We formed the group SWSS back in our hometown during 2013 and moved to LA together at the same time. Our futures are intertwined with each others and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Its great to have brothers that push you to exceed expectations. I wouldn’t want anyone else in my corner.
