Meet Mati Gavriel | Music Producer & Recording Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mati Gavriel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mati, why did you pursue a creative career?
Absolutely. My journey into the arts was almost predestined, shaped by a unique blend of cultural heritage, familial influence, and an innate curiosity to figure things out. Born in Israel, and growing up in Germany with an Italian father, I was introduced to a world where different narratives coexist. This multicultural environment was further enriched at home, where Hebrew, German, and English were spoken. Navigating through these languages not only shaped my communication skills but also my creative thinking, allowing me to see the world through various lenses.
My family, particularly my mother, played a pivotal role in nurturing my artistic inclinations. She was far from traditional, recognizing and nurturing the spark of creativity in her children. She encouraged us from a young age, providing musical instruments and fostering an environment where creativity was not just an activity, but a way of life.
This encouragement was not limited to the confines of our home. My older sister, who used to be a fashion stylist, introduced me to the dynamic world of fashion, music and design. Moreover, my early experiences in Berlin were instrumental in shaping my career. When I was 20 years old, I started working as a music video set designer and producer for some of the most famous bands in Germany. This experience gave me an invaluable inside look at collaboration and production work, further fueling my passion for the creative arts both behind and in front of camera.
Being surrounded by creative individuals, whether in fashion, music, or other arts, was incredibly inspiring. It was a community that not only recognized but also nurtured the creativity within me, helping to unveil talents I was yet to discover.
From a young age, I was drawn to the arts. I found myself not only participating but also producing and facilitating creative projects for friends and other artists close to me. This love for collaboration and connection has been a driving force in my career. Academically, I pursued studies in engineering, digital media, and coding, complementing my artistic pursuits. My desire to figure things out, whether it’s finding the perfect lyric to a song, finding the right melody for the movie scene, or writing code, has always driven me.
However, embracing an artistic career isn’t just about creative expression. It’s also about understanding the business aspect. It involves making decisions that are not only artistically fulfilling but also financially viable. This understanding has enabled me to live my dream as an artist and producer while also growing my business.
In summary, now living in Los Angeles since 2015, my journey into the arts has been a fusion of innate passion, nurtured talent, and strategic thinking, and as long as I have the opportunity to create, I will choose to run with it. For me, the act of creation is not just a career choice, it’s a way of life, a path that continually unfolds with endless possibilities and new horizons to explore.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What truly distinguishes me in my field is my ability to be an attentive listener and an effective problem solver. I possess a keen ear and a discerning taste, which are essential in my line of work. A significant part of my role involves brainstorming with artists, navigating through creative challenges, and discovering unique angles to bring ideas to fruition.
One of the most valuable insights I’ve gained is the importance of consistently delivering quality work, being dependable, and maintaining a positive attitude. These elements invariably lead to excellent outcomes. I’ve come to understand that every challenge presents a learning opportunity. The industry is much like a rollercoaster – full of ups and downs – and it’s crucial to embrace and enjoy this journey. Adopting a professional approach that is not only honest and transparent but also doesn’t take business matters personally has been pivotal in my career.
Indeed, nothing comes easy, but I firmly believe in the power of hard work and its eventual rewards.
As for the most significant lesson I’ve learned, and one I would impart to others, it is the importance of being present and focused. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, it’s crucial that it resonates with you and feels fulfilling. Doubts may arise, but staying open to the myriad possibilities that surround us – even those that aren’t immediately apparent – is key.
Above all, it’s about cherishing the process of creation, immersing oneself in the moment, and truly enjoying the act of bringing something new and exciting into the world.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles is a vibrant tapestry of art, nature, music, and culinary delights, and I love exploring every bit of it. When it comes to art, the city is a treasure trove. I often find myself drawn to the Hauser and Wirth Art Gallery in Downtown, where contemporary art comes alive. The MOCA and LACMA are also regular stops for me, offering an eclectic mix of artistic expressions.
Music in LA is just as diverse as its art. The iconic Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl are my go-to places for an unforgettable musical experience. For a more intimate setting, I love the vibes at Permanent Records Roadhouse in Highland Park.
Recreation and nature are never far in LA. A hike up Mt. Washington leads to the serene Self Realization Center, perfect for a moment of meditation amidst the bustling city. Cycling through the picturesque hills of Pasadena and around the Rose Bowl is another favorite activity of mine. And of course, using my membership at The Huntington Garden is always a delight, as is exploring the vast expanse of Griffith Park. A walk up to the Hollywood sign from Beachwood Canyon offers not just exercise but also iconic views.
Speaking of Pasadena, I’m particularly fascinated by its architectural heritage. The Gamble House is a prime example of American Craftsman style architecture that I never tire of visiting. Its intricate design and historical significance are a testament to the city’s rich cultural past.
No visit to LA is complete without a day trip to Malibu and Venice. Watching the skateboarders in Venice is always a thrill, showcasing the vibrant local culture.
When it comes to dining, LA’s diverse culinary scene never disappoints. The Goldfish Bar and Kitchen Mouse in Highland Park are my top picks for a casual yet delicious meal. For exquisite Italian cuisine, Speranza in Silverlake is the place to be. The Grand Central Market houses the best Vegan & Gluten-free Ramen at Ramen-hood, and for a taste of the Middle East, Mizlala is my go-to spot.
One of my favorite things to do, which ties all these experiences together, is driving down the 101. This iconic highway is like a main artery of the city, connecting everything from Downtown to Capitol Records, Griffith Park, and the architectural marvels in Pasadena. It’s a journey that encapsulates the essence of LA, with each exit leading to a new adventure.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My journey has been significantly enriched and shaped by the support and recognition of several remarkable individuals. First and foremost, I would like to extend a shoutout to the incredibly talented Oscar-nominated songwriter, Diane Warren. Her trust in me to produce songs alongside some of today’s most renowned recording artists has been both an honor and a testament to our collaborative synergy.
Additionally, I must express my profound gratitude to my colleague and friend, commercial director Tryan George. Working with Tryan is always a fulfilling experience, whether I’m composing music for his films or assisting him in directing. His creativity and vision never cease to inspire me.
Another collaborator who deserves a special mention is Sheppard Solomon. Our partnership in writing songs, both for my artist project and for other signed artists who have recorded our work, has been an incredibly rewarding aspect of my career.
Last, but certainly not least, I would like to give a heartfelt shoutout to my wife, Jenny Karr. Her support and belief in my abilities have been my constant source of strength.
