We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Copley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, what do you attribute your success to?
Persistence. It’s said time and time again by every successful person in history, but I firmly believe that persistence is what makes or break a career. For me, I think persistence is more than just keeping your sights on the end goal, it’s about your persistence in relationships and self maintenance (Which I always have to work on, but it’s important to give yourself love).

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My story as an Artists is a little different from most. The medium in which I have expressed my art has changed numerous times over my life, and I just turned 25. My interest in music and singing started in the theater, doing musicals and plays while in elementary school. Since adolescence, I have let my creativity flow from theatre, to rock bands, to film and tv, to writing poetry, songs, and a whole musical etc. After getting Bachelors degree in Musical Theatre at the University of Cincinnati CCM, I decided to found my most current and active artistic endeavor of UNWELL, a pop-punk band based out of Detroit, MI. While in UNWELL, I have toured the country multiple times, created a large following online, and started a few smaller artistic endeavors that are still currently in the works 🙂

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Detroit and its uniqueness, it offers so much entertainment and fun things to do. I’m a MASSIVE foodie so that would be the bulk of our agenda for the trip. I’d start with breakfast at The Hudson Cafe, Brooklyn Street Local, or Iggy’s Eggies. Then for any other meal, my favorites recently have been Johnny Noodle King, Takoi, BARDA, Imperial, Trap Vegan, and 888 Sushi

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout so many people, I have had an incredible amount of support from the people I surround myself with in life. If I had to choose one in particular that’s helped me tremendously, It would be my high school choir teacher, Mr. Bert Van Dyke. He was a truly integral part in my origins in the arts. All kinds of arts too, whether it was in his class for Choir, in the after school theater program, the local community theatre, my high school pop punk band, ANYTHING! He was incredibly supportive of me and my artistic endeavors, no matter what they were. He always allowed me to push the boundaries of what was “allowed” or “typical” for a student in High School. He let me do things artistically that had never been done before. He allowed me to create and express myself freely while giving me a large supporting hand to lean on. I will be forever grateful for the time I spent with him in my early days of middle and high school. That time period in life is truly the biggest developmental period for creativity in my opinion, and I’m glad he allowed me that safe space to blossom into the artist I am today.
