We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Komo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
For me, success comes down to three core habits: discipline, curiosity, and patience. No matter how I’m feeling; excited, uninspired, motivated, or overwhelmed – I commit to working on my craft, whether it’s filmmaking, music production, or learning something new that sparks my interest. Curiosity keeps me evolving, pushing me to experiment, adapt, and refine my skills. Patience is just as important because real progress – whether in creativity, business, or fitness – takes time. Anyone who knows me knows that fitness is another huge pillar of my life, and I’ve realized the same principles apply across both domains. You don’t see results overnight, but small, consistent efforts compound. Adding a little more weight, doing one extra rep – it might not seem like much in the moment, but a year later, the difference is massive. The same goes for creativity. One small breakthrough today, one extra hour refining your craft, one new technique – it all builds. Over time, this discipline shapes you into the kind of person who shows up and gives their best, no matter the circumstances. That’s why I focus on the process, not just the outcome. There’s a quote I love: “The man who loves walking will walk further than the man who loves the destination.” The key to long-term success is learning to love the work itself. If you do that, you’ll go further than you ever thought possible.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is an extension of who I am – woven from my experiences, emotions, and the themes that have shaped my perspective on life. Whether through filmmaking, music, or visual storytelling, my goal is always to create something that evokes emotion and endures beyond the moment. What sets my work apart is my ability to merge storytelling with immersive sound and striking visuals, crafting experiences that resonate on a deeper level. One of my most meaningful projects to date has been my award-winning short film “A Forgotten Life”, a 2.5-year journey documenting my grandfather’s battle with Alzheimer’s. That film was more than just a creative pursuit – it was a way to preserve his memory, explore the fragility of time, and tell a story that so many can relate to. It remains the project I’m most proud of, not just for its execution, but for the emotional impact it has had on others.

Reaching this point in my career hasn’t been easy. Like any creative path, it has been filled with uncertainty, setbacks, and moments of doubt. But I’ve learned that success isn’t about avoiding challenges – it’s about adapting, staying resilient, and continuing to evolve. Growth comes from pushing forward even when the path isn’t clear, trusting that passion and consistency will lead the way.

Now, I’m excited to expand my creative horizons through music production. I don’t see myself confined to one medium – expression, for me, takes many forms. The greatest creative endeavor isn’t about choosing between filmmaking, music, or visual art, but about weaving them all together into something greater than the sum of their parts. My mission is to create work that endures – pieces that stand the test of time, evoke emotion, and leave a lasting impact. More than anything, I want the world to know that I’m just getting started, constantly evolving, and always searching for new ways to tell stories that matter.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d keep it simple – early morning beach walks on the west side, hikes with a view, visiting friends in the entertainment industry, and hitting some of my favorite restaurants. Maybe we’d catch a music show or two, depending on what’s happening that week. For me, the best trips aren’t just about where you go but who you’re with. It’s all about the bond you share, so I’d make sure we were staying active, eating great food, and just experiencing life in a way that feels meaningful to us.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For me, the collective energy of being around driven, creative people who are constantly pushing boundaries is what fuels my inspiration. That kind of passion is infectious. Whether it’s filmmakers crafting compelling stories, musicians experimenting with new sounds, or entrepreneurs building something from the ground up, seeing others relentlessly chase their vision pushes me to go even harder in my own pursuits. It’s that shared hunger for growth, the late-night brainstorming sessions, the unspoken challenge to keep raising the bar. Being in this kind of environment reminds me that success isn’t about reaching a finish line—it’s about constantly evolving, learning, and creating. That’s what keeps me inspired every day.
