Meet Matt Vaught | Tattoo Artist, entrepreneur, and coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Vaught and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
In my opinion, the single most important factor behind my success is that I am prone to obsessing on whatever I am doing. When the idea of becoming a tattoo artist became a realistic outcome for me, (when I stopped doubting myself), I became completely obsessed on it. It was all I thought about. And when you become obsessed with something, it is very hard to be lazy. I constantly want to be taking steps toward my goal. Relentlessly pushing forward until I achieve it. And it’s the same basic formula for WHATEVER your goal may be. Therefore that’s the key to success. Get obsessed

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art and my content are an extension and expression of my genuine self. My whole life story has contributed to my art and where I am at today professionally. That is what sets me apart from others… my unique, personal experiences. My brand is a living, breathing entity of its own. So it’s constantly growing and changing with me. Because of that, even I don’t know where it’s going next.
Currently, I am most excited about the next phase. I am beginning to branch out and travel the world. I am working on opening my own studio (Cursed Kings Tattoo). I’m developing a coaching program for tattoo artists. I am working on Tattourbus, where I tattoo and interview musicians AT THE VENUE while they’re on tour. As well as constantly working on myself AND my art.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Southern California we have the most beautiful beaches. You can’t come visit without stopping at the beach. Then we can visit museums in LA and San Diego. Orange County also has Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm for amusement parks.
For food, the Mexican food in So Cal is second only to Mexico. And if you want the best Mexican food, we gotta hit a roach coach (taco truck). You might pay for it twice, but it’s greasy and delicious and you have to try it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly, so many people have played a HUGE role in who I have become and I would hate to leave anyone out! But to name a few: Chris Towler is my first mentor and a father figure for me. Without him, I wouldn’t be a tattoo artist today. My daughter Alice, for giving me a reason to turn my life around and become a better person. The 12 step program for giving me the tools to do so. My partner Kiana for holding me accountable to stay outside my comfort zone. Our boys, Dylan and Maverick, for giving me the strength to continue working on myself so I can try to be the best role model I can be. The list goes on, and none are less important than the others. But to name everyone would need its own book!! I love you all!
