We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Koman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matthew, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I often discuss this with myself, loved ones, clients. I will be fulfilled in this lifetime if my legacy is built on the values that I live by. Those values drive my mission. My mission is based in serving the world, one interaction at a time, an energy that unites mind, body, and spirit. I want people to remember how I made them feel. For me it is not about a specific achievement, it is about creating community, and relationships within those inclusive communities that are sustainable and healthy. Rooted in values that bring the people into harmony with the earth and the elements. Values that alchemize and transcend into the next generations and when people think of Matthew Michael Koman they associate me with becoming the best possible version of themselves because that is the life I led and encouraged everyone I encountered to do the same.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is my expression. My art is my ability to connect with people. I think the art of relating, and building relationships is bonded in reciprocity. Being in relationship in the truest sense, includes holding space for someone as a listener, and feeling safe to be able to express your authentic self. I am not interested in necessarily being recognized for being better than anybody else. I think we all have unique skills and tools and that we get to choose to express them. I am most excited to allow my brand to organically grow, within the brand being the authentic message that becoming who you are is the most important thing. Getting to this point was certainly not easy. I have exchanged in value and energy with thousands of human beings through my young twenties. Thousands may sound like a stretch, but it is not. It is a privilege and an honor to have all the experiences I have had in the coaching and sports industries. I consider my brand an artistic expression now and I utilize all of my experience to impact and serve today. I would like to identify one of the main challenges I recognized that helped me into a profound shift. The challenge was that I spent a ton of time putting everybody else’s needs before my own. I have come to understand that I cannot serve anybody in the essence of service if I am not serving myself first. This realization has allowed me to develop a practice and a lifestyle that embodies “practice what you preach”. Leading by example now makes teaching, coaching, and serving others a true relationship business. Expressing my authentic self, allows others around me to feel that I am a human just like everybody else. I have my mishaps, and challenges, and I do my best to create skills and implement them into my lifestyle practice that support who I am. Who I am, as previously stated, is a person who desires to leave a legacy that unites human beings. Connecting in this way, has allowed my brand Love4Life to flourish. Each interaction has equal importance and through my lense, if everybody in the world honored their existence by building a lifestyle that supports who they are and their dream…. well, mission complete.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a lot of people that deserve shoutouts in my life. I will start with my family. They deserve a shoutout simply for giving me and opportunity to be alive. So much of how I have developed into who I am is based on all of my childhood and adolescent experiences. Later on in life, I met my wife Kristen and she is a person who grounds me consistently. She challenges me thoroughly, and confronts me in healthy and peaceful ways. She believes in me and the impact that I can continue to make in the world. Next, I shoutout my forever friends. There are certain relationships that mature over time and continue to be people that I can lean on through all of it, especially the challenges. One of my biggest mentors that I have learned the most from is Paul Chek, a holistic health pioneer. He has made a significant impact on how I have been able to transcend my lifestyle into one that honors me. I am big into self-education and have spent a lot of time leaning into philosophy, anthroposophy, history, religion, psychology, physical education, communication, health, and so much more. The list of people who have impacted me and deserve a shoutout is quite long. Lastly, I’d like to shoutout my current Team USA teammates and coaches who have provided me with a support system and community that has allowed my growth to flourish for the 3.5 years I have been an athlete in the organization. One more addition: I have coached thousands of humans, which means thousands of people in the past 12+ years have TRUSTED me to guide and lead them in some fashion. Shoutout to everybody who I have come across and shared energy and space with. Whether we are in contact now, or not, You all deserve a shoutout and have impacted who I am today.

A special shoutout to Evan Yabu and the entire Thousand Oaks High School Football program and administration. In January of 2022 we agreed to pioneer into some new territory together and that included myself leading a holistic health curriculum for the entire year. The integration proved to be successful on the field, the young men of the Thousand Oaks Lancers 2022 football team finished the regular season at 10-0 making history. I am honored to share this with the community and the focus was primarily on each individual developing habits and lifestyle skills that supported, “becoming who they are.” The feedback that Evan and I received throughout the year and at the end of the year, as well as witnessing communication skills, emotional intelligence development on and off the field, more discipline nutritional and hydration habits, a steady spiritual/quiet time practice, regular breathwork, and so many more skills were all enhanced and developed. Of all the work I have done in my career, this past year was the most rewarding, and I told the team from the start that it would all only mean something if it was reciprocal. Credit to everybody, they bought into themselves.
