We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Mathison and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matthew, how do you think about risk?
I began my career on the public equities trading desk at Goldman Sachs—public investing is all about pricing risk: risk to the upside, risk to the downside. And when risk is mispriced, there’s an opportunity to generate profits. Shortly after I started, the dot-com bubble was booming—and then it crashed. I watched fortunes vanish overnight. I also saw fortunes made by those who managed risk well.

Later, at my own investment firm, the lessons I learned during the dot-com crash helped guide me through the 2007–2008 financial crisis. I was able to manage risk and actually made money for my clients during that time. COVID was no different. And now, the trade wars and tariff-related sell-offs are no different either.

Taking risks—and managing them—is core to how we think, how we invest, and where we find our edge.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hustle sets me apart. I’ve always hustled and stayed consistently persistent in reaching for new heights and pursuing new outcomes. Working on Wall Street during the first half of my career—first at Goldman Sachs and then with my own company—was an absolutely wild ride. Leaving Wall Street to work at a Chinese public company felt like something out of a Hollywood movie. Then I moved into the private side, where I’ve been fortunate to start, help, join, invest in, and advise so many amazing companies, startups, ideas, platforms, and organizations. Through it all, I’ve always tried to out-hustle everyone with relentless effort and a never-ending energy of optimism and progress. That drive is what led to the creation of the entire Leadership Orbit brand and story—which is now fundamental to MBL Partners.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to travel. Since you asked about a best friend, I would likely pick a golf destination and enjoy golfing, eating great food and enjoying the sauna at the end of each day.

If it were with my family, I would choose some exotic or faraway destination on our bucket list and travel, eat, explore, and spend time in other cultures, scenes and locations.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been the great beneficiary of so many wonderful examples, mentors and leaders that have influenced my life. You always know who your truest north stars are during the hardest periods in life and I have been blessed with a wife who has always given me courage, support and love. Professionally, there have been several mentors that have always been there for me during my highs and lows. I would like to specially give a shout out to Jeff Strauss, whose tough feedback and straight talk has been a rock in my path for more than 25 years now.
