We had the good fortune of connecting with Max Randolph and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Max, why did you pursue a creative career?
My imagination drove me to be creative from a young age. I feel as though I never really chose to pursue a creative career, more so that it chose me. I would not have survived without my art and creative pursuits. However, I did choose steel as my medium. I have a big personality with wild energy, especially when I was younger. Steel was the first form I met that could meet my ferocity and challenge me. After 20 years on this path, I am still finding new ways to express my creativity through forged steel.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work isn’t just the skill and discipline of blacksmithing, what truly sets my work apart is the artistic expression that is unique to how I see the world. In my work I like to explore the impossible and suspend perceptions. What could be a simple gate or doorway, to me they are portals. I like to create things that feel out of place and time. I’m looking forward to creating more public art so that I can share it with my community. I am excited to continue to challenge myself, because I have no idea what I am capable of. I hope to inspire more awe in the people around me, and give others more magical moments to delight in.
I believe the creative process is challenging for all those who dare to express themselves. A main lesson I have learned along the way is to trust your intuition. Others will always doubt you, but if you can learn to persevere and trust yourself wonderful things can happen. I’ve found that when I follow my passion and joy, I’m always on the right path, even if at the time it doesn’t feel like it.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to my wife Casey. She has made a profound difference in my life and my career. She has pushed me in ways I would not have grown on my own. From encouraging me to dive into social media, to building community, and encouraging me to be my best and kindest self, Casey has changed my life in a way I never could have hoped or dreamed of.
