We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya & Miles Crosman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maya & Miles, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It started with attending music festivals together and imagining what a concert experience would be like with interactive theming and theatrical performance. Our love of sci-fi and electronic music seemed a natural pairing, and we imagined inviting guests to other worlds to dance with alien hosts as a story unfolded in real time around them. We realized we were envisioning something that was not available on the market, and the only way to attend such an event was to create it ourselves. When we launched SPACE PARTY LLC in 2016, it was after years of discovering what the brand was, and identifying what services it would provide. With a combination of promotional videos, character improv and musical performances punctuated by theatrical moments, we were able to throw four parties that proved our concept viable, and even attracted sponsors. Our idea of integrating movie magic with festivals came naturally. Our mother was an Imagineer at Disneyland and our dad worked in Visual Effects on feature films like Independence Day and Flubber. Growing up in Los Angeles visiting Disneyland and film sets gave us a deep passion for production design, story and immersive environments. So when we started attending festivals together in 2012, we couldn’t help but imagine the possibilities.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our events are different because they have a backstory. Each one is an episode of a comedic series following DJs Miles and Maya on their adventures through the galaxy. You can watch videos about the aliens you’ll meet at the party, and then get your picture with them when you arrive. Not only that, you’ll see how the story ends, live on stage, set to music. Space Party also gives us an opportunity to create music, produce videos, and perform live. Coming into this project, we were not experts on any of this but in the course of throwing four parties, we’ve produced nearly twenty videos and released seven songs. We got to where we are through adversity on just about every front. Firstly, there is the funding. The level of production we want to achieve is expensive, and our man hours can only go so far. We also found out quickly why events don’t typically have elaborate set pieces. Erecting a seven foot disco ball spaceship is no walk in the park. We’ve only managed to overcame the challenges because we have a core team of artists who help us bring the party to life. COVID, of course, posed a new challenge. We were already at a crossroads and it gave us an opportunity to think about how we wanted to grow our brand, especially without a present need for parties on Earth. Ultimately, we had to go back to what inspired us in the first place. Though Miles went to school for acting and Maya for design, we connected on our love of music and comedy and found a shared vision that allowed us to apply our education and abilities. So we have begun work on our very first SPACE PARTY album, a narrative adventure with plenty of bangers along the way. Getting to collaborate with each other has kept us motivated throughout the pandemic that continues to affect our home city of LA, and our hearts go out to our community, our city, our country. Art brings us together, and we can’t wait until we can launch the next mission and dance together again.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
DTLA: Angel City Brewery, Hauser & Wirth, Clifton’s. HOLLYWOOD: Any of the Houston Brother’s Bars but Break Room 86 and Davey Wayne’s are our favorites, UCB Franklyn. SILVERLAKE: Soap Plant / Wacko, Mohawk Bend. ECHO PARK: Short Stop. STUDIO CITY: Aroma Cafe. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We’d love to dedicate this Shoutout to Patrick Russel Burton, who was a friend of ours for many years before becoming a Director of Photography and Editor for SPACE PARTY. His work is AMAZING, and he is just an all around great guy. So if you’re looking for some top quality production then hit him up at Space Dog Media.
