We had the good fortune of connecting with Mayce Galoni and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mayce, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Well, I really did not want to go to college or university because I hated school, and I was obsessed with stand up when I was a teenager and thought “if I could figure out how to make money at this before the end of high school I wouldn’t have to go to school anymore.” My plan was become the next Kevin Hart in 1-2 years and drop out before grade 12. Instead it took until the first semester of university, and I only became a semi-decent opener for local comedy clubs in Ontario, Canada, but still, I did get to drop out then.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started doing stand up when I was 15 years old. My parents would drive me to open mics at dingy bars on school nights once or twice a week. I was a pretty obsessive kid so I would spend hours everyday trying to write jokes (they were so bad) And I hated school, so I would bring my notebook and spend as much time as I could get away with writing jokes in class as well. After a couple years of this, my friend Manolis Zontanos who was already a headliner helped me get a showcase for the national Canadian comedy club chain, and luckily it went well so they started sending me on the road as the middle act, which means you do 20 minutes before the headliner.
I did that for a few years, worked my way up until I was headlining myself, then I recorded a comedy album and got asked to be on Canadian TV a few times. I also got to write for a few seasons of a satirical news show. And I put out another album. And over the pandemic, when comedy mostly shut down, my girlfriend and I had the time to put together our applications for an American work visa and so we moved down to Los Angeles. We’ve been here for about a year and it’s awesome. I’m now just doing shows, working on my next album and trying with moderate desperation to get on American TV.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok but first you need to know that my best friend is a total nerd. I live in West Hollywood, around the corner from several strip clubs, but my friend and I would make a B-line right for the Golden Apple Comic book store on Melrose. We would probably spend an hour or so in there and get in a heated argument about a fictional character. Then we would need to change things up a bit, so we would head over to Mega City One Comic book store, also on melrose. After about an hour there, our debate would escalate into a full on slapping fight, at which point we’d get kicked out onto the street. Having worked up quite an appetite from all the slaps, we’d go over to Fred62 because they have the best milkshakes I’ve ever had. After that we would go see a Don’t Tell Comedy Show, which are these wicked stand up comedy shows at secret locations around the city. Then we would end the day with some Panda Express, which I understand is not local, but I do think the one on N. Cahuenga Blvd. is really killing it. I’m realizing now you asked for a week long itinerary instead of a day, but I imagine we would just repeat this 6 more times to be honest.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom and dad, or as I refer to them when I’m PISSED: Morreen and Lawrence, are the best parents and always taught me that if you pursue what you love, you can usually find some scheme or another to make it work. Also my friend and fellow comic Manolis Zontanos, who taught me everything I know about stand up comedy and being authentic.
And my girlfriend Sophie Buddle who is a brilliant comedian, and who writes all of my jokes*
* that’s a joke**
