We had the good fortune of connecting with Me’Chele Frierson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Me’Chele, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I was very young, my eldest brother was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. The clinical social worker assigned to him did a really good job of educating the family on his diagnosis and how family support is so crucial to the prognosis of his illness. From there, my love of mental health developed and grew.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always loved to decorate, throw dinner parties, or just create wonderful or peaceful experiences for my loved ones. I definitely bring it into my work. Whether it’s creating an artistic or peaceful ambience for my clients or hosting events for colleagues to celebrate our profession, I love expressing this side of myself. It’s extremely therapeutic.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot in Cleveland, Ohio, would be the Botanical Gardens. For brunch, I would definitely suggest Le Petit Triangle. For lunch, if you like a good turkey burger and sweet potato French fries, Local West never fails. Dinner in Cleveland? That’s a tough one. I would suggest Zhug, India Garden, or L’Arbatros.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Most High and my mother first, of course! I am also extremely grateful for my mentors, who have been pivotal in my development as a social worker and my overall success in my career. These ladies are Elizabeth Jones, Dionne Jones, Anne Sowell, and Andrea Porter. Of course, I have so many other people who constantly lift me up. However, these women in particular have really gotten me through scary and tight moments early on in my path.
