We had the good fortune of connecting with Melesia Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melesia, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
When facing the difficult decision of whether to continue pursuing a goal or give it up, I have found it helpful to take a constructive approach. Rather than focusing solely on the challenges and potential roadblocks, I evaluate my goals, passions, and circumstances in a positive light. I reflect on my commitment and enthusiasm, considering how I can overcome any obstacles that may arise. Seeking feedback from trusted individuals and evaluating my progress objectively helps me stay on track. I remain open to adjusting my approach, assessing resource investments, and considering the impact on my emotional well-being. I also factor in the potential for learning and growth, and am willing to redefine success if needed. Timing and adaptability are also essential in this decision-making process. Overall, I believe that taking a constructive approach helps me make the best decision for my future success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a self-taught designer, I faced many challenges, including perfectionism and doubt in my abilities. However, I did not let these obstacles stop me from pursuing my passion for fashion. I took every opportunity to learn and grow, even when it meant stepping out of my comfort zone and facing my fears. Through hard work, determination, and the support of my peers and mentors, I overcame my fear of public speaking and turned it into a strength. I sought out networking events and seminars to challenge myself and learn new skills. With time and practice, I achieved great success in the fashion industry, including being featured in prestigious publications and participating in major fashion shows. My journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of stepping outside of our comfort zones to achieve our goals. Despite the challenges we may face, we can always find a way to overcome them and emerge stronger and more resilient on the other side.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For an unforgettable week in New York City with my best friend, we would have an itinerary packed with iconic landmarks, culinary delights, cultural experiences, and hidden gems. Our mornings would start with a stroll through Central Park, enjoying the serene beauty of the Bow Bridge and Bethesda Terrace. We would head to a cozy spot like Sarabeth’s for breakfast, famous for its legendary pancakes and fresh juices.

Afterward, we would explore the trendy neighborhoods of Brooklyn, walking across the Brooklyn Bridge to DUMBO for breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Lunch at Elite Williamsburg would be a must. In the afternoon, we would visit the Brooklyn Museum or take a stroll through Williamsburg’s street art-covered streets for a dose of culture.

Our evenings would be dedicated to Broadway shows, and we’d catch a performance of a critically acclaimed play or musical. Dinner at Miss Lilly’s for their jerk corn. For nightlife, we’d explore the speakeasy scene, starting with Please Don’t Tell (PDT) in the East Village.

Midweek, we’d venture to the Upper West Side to explore the American Museum of Natural History and then indulge in a late lunch at a random selection of her choice. The evening would be spent at the Top of the Rock Observatory, marveling at the city lights.

A visit to the 9/11 Memorial and One World Observatory would be a poignant yet essential part of the itinerary. Lunch at nearby Eataly in the Financial District would provide a culinary break. In the evening, a walk along the High Line followed by dinner at Chelsea Market would offer a taste of the city’s culinary diversity.

As the week comes to a close, we’d explore the historic Greenwich Village, visit Washington Square Park, and savor a classic New York-style bagel with lox and cream cheese at Murray’s Bagels. For a grand finale, we’d end the trip with a sunset cruise around the Statue of Liberty, taking in the city’s skyline from the water.

Throughout the week, we would embrace the city’s energy, indulge in its diverse cuisine, and immerse ourselves in its rich cultural tapestry, creating memories that would last a lifetime

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In 2008, I joined the military, but it didn’t align with my soul, leaving me unhappy. Despite this, I made the best of my four-year tour. Due to budgetary constraints, the military began downsizing, and I was one of the many selected to resign. This was a clear sign that not even a government job is secure. After leaving the military, I had no idea what life had in store for me, and I didn’t have a backup plan. My original plan was to serve for eight years to save as much money as I could to financially prepare myself for when my time in the military ended.

In 2011, a week after transitioning from the military, I randomly purchased a sewing machine and started a clothing boutique catering to women. Though my first attempt at making a pencil skirt was a failure, I didn’t give up. Instead, I put away the sewing machine and focused on personal development and other aspects of my life. That same year, I was introduced to Think and Grow Rich, my journey began when I started implementing what I learned. With the support of my partner, Darnell Williams, and friends like Patricia Rountree and Georgia Loza, I continued to pursue my passion for designing clothes.

I also read countless books and listened to podcasts that helped shape me. Looking back, I realize that my journey wasn’t easy, but it taught me that even when things don’t go according to plan, we have the power to create new opportunities. I hope that my story inspires others to pursue their passions and never give up, even in the face of failure.
