We had the good fortune of connecting with Melina Cruz Bautista and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melina, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

I’ve been fortunate enough to immerse myself in the world of creativity as a full-time non traditional college student this year, focusing my time in Latin American Studies and Digital Media. I hold deep gratitude for my sister, Karina and eldest aunt Apolonia, for guiding me through the city and teaching me how to weave these impactful stories of existence through the lens of a camera. Highlighting the importance of Indigenous existence is what fuels my creative path.

My accomplishments this year and beyond are a tribute to the young minds, mothers, and first-generation children of Pico-Union, L.A, Oaxaca, Mx and across the globe. I firmly believe that our youth deserve to opportunity to explore their creative potential and succeed for generations to come.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

My career offically revolves around Vida Con Mel, where my work goes beyond being just a photo series; it’s a tribute to the past, a celebration of the present, and an inspiration for the future. This summer I embraced a transformative journey when selected to participate in a free mentoring program offered by The Bridge Pro team. I’m excited to share that we’ve recently unveiled our final group show, scheduled for Thursday November 16, 2023 from 7:00-9:00 pm. During this exhibition, I’ll have the privlege of showcasing brand new images alongside five talented artists.

In the longevity the goal is to unite my passion for creativity and education right here in the city. I envision providing a physical space where my sister Anahi and I, co-hosts of LA SERRANITA podcast, and can offer free workshops to empower our neighbors to share their own stories with the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Starting the morning in Pico-Union would mean a visit over to La Cuscatleca for vegan pan dulce to pair with a good cup of coffee. I’d also recommend ice cream, or crunchy savory snacks with Nieves Xochi Oax, both located down Pico Blvd. Laslty visitng LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes at La Placita Olvera is also a great weekend activity their exhibitions are always a great way to learn the acts of history that have occured in the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe immense gratitude to my chosen family and community. Once I returned to Pico Union in 2018 , I began working with our youth, they helped me change my life expectations around completely. Every day, my drive to really own my creative skills is fueled by the remarkable young souls I’ve had the privielge of mentoring.

Extending my appreciation to Elizabeth Bush, Jon Soohoo, and John Soto who saw potential in my creativty  when I first crossed path with them as a teenager. I am eternally grateful to the invaluable guidance and mentorship I’ve recevied along the way. This journey is an ongoing marathon, and I am excited to see where it leads next.
