We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Minh Truex and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced over the years is breaking away from the perfectionist mindset. I used to turn down opportunities out of fear of failure. It took a while to realize that I had already failed by not attempting. Now, I understand that often, when things don’t go as planned, that’s when great things unfold. I now consider missed opportunities as failures, not instances where things didn’t align as intended.

Reflecting on my career journey, I take pride in the diversity of work I’ve produced and the range of clients I’ve collaborated with over time. Lately, I’ve directed more attention toward my personal artwork. While I love the challenges of crafting large-scale installations, I’ve been drawn to create art that’s conceptually driven. This upcoming phase excites me the most—continuing to craft pieces that deeply resonate while also continuing to partner with remarkable clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Winding down from summer, here are my favorite things to do in LA during the summertime. I love LACMA’s outdoor jazz nights, where you can bring a picnic, wine, and relax with friends. The Greek Theatre holds a special place in my heart as my preferred outdoor concert venue. I can’t single out any one specific spot for tacos, as I believe every street vendor boasts some of the best tacos in LA. Definitely pay a visit to a farmers’ market—Santa Monica’s offers the freshest produce, while Hollywood’s features a delightful mix including plants, flowers, oysters, and other prepared food stands. Lastly, I recommend spending some quality time in Koreatown. It’s great for groups – get some Korean BBQ and then spend the night at a karaoke bar!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have had unwavering support from my friends and family. While I tend to be my own harshest critic, their constant encouragement has provided the motivation I needed to preserver and thrive during times of doubt.
