We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Parsons and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When I was younger, I took a relatively risk-free path of becoming a pediatrician. This path took hard work, determination, discipline, and patience, but there was not much risk involved. It was a huge risk to make the jump from being a pediatrician, working as a partner in private practice for 22 years, to becoming an entrepreneur, working only for myself. I saw a recent video on tiktok by @rogerskaer and it really resonated with me… the more you are willing to f*ck around, the more you will find out. At this stage in the game, I have the luxury of being able to f*ck around, fail, and find out until I consistently f*ck around, succeed, and find out! The more risk, the more reward!
What should our readers know about your business?
The thing that sets me apart from others is my sense of humor and my sense of calm. After being a physician for 22 years, as a life coach, there is virtually nothing that my clients can come to me with that I can’t coach them on. And, even when we are dealing with serious subjects, I find a way to help them laugh.
I got to where I am with my business by being willing to take a risk on myself, by being decisive in my business life, and not spending a lot of time in indecision. I have been able to honestly assess my weaknesses, and work on improving in those areas of my life. I am a well-resourced woman. If I don’t know how to do something, or if it is not in my ‘zone of genius’, I find someone else who is a genius at whatever I need, and I hire them.
There are days when it is easy to be an entrepreneur and there are days when it totally sucks. I appreciate the amazing days, and I don’t let the sucky days get me down! I know that the only way that I fail at this is if I quit.
I want people to know that I am a product of my own product. I am still doing the work that I ask my clients to do, and I would never ask them to do something that I also was not willing to try. I will always have a coach personally because I truly believe that my brain is my best investment. The ROI has been out of this world, so far!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t have an opinion about this, as I am not from LA. I would love to visit, though! I have been to the Staples Center for a Madonna concert in the past! Does that count???
If you visit Columbus, Ohio, where I live, I would definitely spend a day walking around German Village. I would go to The Fox in the Snow for a cappuccino and a scone. I would spend the morning walking around Schiller Park. I would lunch at Schmidt’s. I would spend the entire afternoon at The Book Loft, browsing and buying ALL the books, and then I would have dinner on the patio at Lindey’s.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would not be where I am today if it were not for the bravery, success, vision, persistence, and amazingness of my life coaches – Katrina Ubell, MD; Maggie Reyes; Stacey Boehman, Bev Aron, MD Priyanka Venugopal, Brooke Castillo at The Life Coach School. They deserve credit for my journey over the past 4 years.
