We had the good fortune of connecting with Mercedes Van Pelt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mercedes, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in Redondo Beach and grew up in West Torrance. I came from a family that would be considered lower, middle-class and grew up watching my parents struggle with money always being tight trying to raise 5 children. My parents had begged, borrowed and even lied on their loan application to buy a home in West Torrance but over time that home grew in equity and gave my parents new opportunities. They refinanced and took out money to buy an income property in Lawndale that also did very well over time. After many years of this process, my parents retired and were able to never have to worry about money again. Watching this, as I grew up, taught me how important it is to own your own home and how home ownership truly changes your financial future. It made me want to become a Real Estate Agent to teach others how to do the same thing. And it has also given me great joy to be a part of helping my client’s change their own financial futures.

What should our readers know about your business?
I take great pride in my work and taking care of my clients which I believe can be best understood by taking a look at the client testimonials I have received and by my track record on closings . These testaments speak volumes to how I treat my clients and how hard I work to get them the best results possible to meet their goals. I feel that buying or selling a home is one of the most important transactions in anyone’s life. Because of that, I believe that it is important to work with someone you trust, someone who is a market expert and someone who can strongly negotiate on your behalf. People trust me with their most valuable asset and it’s a responsibility I take very seriously. I don’t measure success through awards received but rather through the satisfaction of my clients. Whether someone is looking to buy or sell a home, I can provide them with sound and trustworthy advice and help them achieve all of their real estate goals. I believe integrity, honesty, hard work and follow-through in every real estate transaction is of the utmost importance and I work hard to have the hard conversations with my clients. And one of the things that makes me unique is I was born and raised in the South Bay so I have an extensive knowledge of the area. I’m an expert in all of the various neighborhoods, offering exceptional knowledge my clients can’t find anywhere else!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting me for a week, we would have fun exploring the many wonderful things Los Angeles has to offer. We’d start locally and go for a walk at one of our beautiful beaches. We’d then stop for lunch at Gum Tree in Hermosa or Simmzy’s in Manhattan Beach and make sure to hit Tony’s on the Pier for dinner to see a beautiful, Redondo Beach sunset. If they were a Mickey fan, we’d spend a day at Disneyland and they’d have to ride Space Mountain and go to the new Star Wars area. I’d also get tickets for a night out at the Hollywood Bowl so they could enjoy our beautiful weather and see a great concert while enjoying a picnic and cocktails in a box with a fabulous view! If time permitted, I’d also get us tickets to go see a show at the Hollywood Pantages Theater. I LOVE the historical architecture of that theater and it’s always a fantastic night out that you just can’t get anywhere else! And before I let them go home, we’d go for a hike in Palos Verdes so they could see the wonderful access we have to nature and the spectacular views of the Pacific ocean that are always just steps away from anywhere you live in the South Bay.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t have been able to build my business without the support of my husband. He has always stepped in to take care of our children, pick up the dry cleaning or go to the grocery store when I’ve had 80 hour weeks. My children have also been super supportive as they’ve gotten older and have helped out with stuffing envelopes or getting mom to do more social media videos!
