We had the good fortune of connecting with Merritt Goodwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Merritt, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Happiness to me is having the ability to do what I love to do, be around the people I love, and have a positive effect on people in the world. This sounds so much simpler than it is but at the core this is it. As a musician I always feel great happiness when I hear about my music helping someone get through hard times.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It was definitely not easy and hasn’t gotten any easier. I started in Flagstaff AZ then moved to Hollywood to chase music basically. I have had many challenges from couch surfing, to music being rejected, to being ripped off by promotors you name it and I am sure I have experienced some form of it. With every bump in the road I have always learned a lesson. To me failure is just a stepping stone towards success. The more you fail the higher probably the changes of success you have. I would just want people to listen to themselves and discover their passion and follow it to the extreme. Be kind to yourself and whenever failure happens use it and make it positive.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Definitely anywhere in Santa Monica and the Palisades. One of my favorite Thai restaurants is in Santa Monica called Poom Thai. It’s a little hole in the wall but so amazing! On of my favorite spots I have taken many friends is a lookout in the Palisades. These would be the places. Very simple absolutely awesome!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people that deserve recognition, from high school teachers, to college professors, to managers, bandmates, music supervisors etc. Just so many people. One person for sure would be Alecia Mixi Demner who invited me into the band I’ve been in for almost a decade, that helped open me up to a whole new world and absolutely changed my life.
