We had the good fortune of connecting with Meyk Belmonte and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Meyk, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
What was your thought process in creating your own company? The search for independence, professional and creative freedom and growth.
These are factors that, working for someone else is difficult to obtain, you usually have a ceiling of growth and limitations when it comes to how and when to develop your work.
These were some of the most important reasons that made me go ahead with my project.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art consists of tattooing, but I come from other techniques such as oil painting or street art with spray.

I started doing fine line and microrealism byn and color, which are the styles for which it is best known, when I started with these styles, in Spain, there were hardly any artists doing it, today there are still very few artists who perform color microrealism in the country.

I highlight the cleanliness of my work, it is something that for me is very important, that the tattoo visually looks amazing from medium and short distance, I also like to reach the highest level of detail or precision, in the case of color, I try to use the full range of colors that my eye can appreciate when making a microrealistic tattoo.

It has not been an easy road, being one of the first to start doing a new style in my country I have had a lot of criticism about my work, most of the time due to ignorance. It has always been said that the fine line disappears, is something that is not true and that over time has been demonstrated, about the microrealism, it was also said that it would not heal well, but of course, like any tattoo of any style that is not well done! With a good technique and knowing the limits that the skin has at the time of working, it is totally viable to make them and there are already tattoos don more than 5/6 years cured in perfect condition, it is a style now very demanded, so there are more and more artists doing it.

I have always tried to do my job and not let the comments affect me, in the end, I have a lot of people willing to get tattooed with me, that shows me that I am really doing my job well.

Emotionally the artistic world is like a Ferris wheel, sometimes you are up and sometimes you are down, there are weeks where all your works are amazing and others where the ones you have to do may not motivate you, but you have to be constant and always give the best of yourself.

This would also be one of the tips I would give to someone who is about to start in this world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the retiro area or the temple of Debod, the malsana area is always great to have a drink, it’s such a difficult answer, Madrid is a great and amazing city, it has great places to visit and a great gastronomic offer!

Must-see museums, the padro and the Thyssen, the sugar factory does great events and exhibitions, but I recommend walking around the city as anywhere you can discover something incredible to see, many of the spaces are temporary.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Mainly, my gratitude is to all the people who trust in my work day by day and allow me to leave a part of me in each of them. Without them, I could not have improved and evolved as I did and as I will continue to do.
They are one of the most important pillars, since they let themselves be guided and allow us to express their ideas with total confidence so that we can create the best version.
