We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite affirmation is “ I Am Enough” It means so much to me because for so long, I was disconnected from this truth due to my unhealthy connection/obsession with comparison, the thief of true self-awareness, identity, and peace. What I like most about this quote is it releases you from the pressure to be or become anything or anyone else. It empowers you to sit at any table, with any group, and to take on an opportunity, understanding that I belong here as different as I may be from everyone else I AM ENOUGH, what I have is enough I am fully equipped as is and it will forever be enough, even if my enough doesn’t get me the approval of, or validation from others. Even if my enough doesn’t get a like, I am STILL Enough!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I’m a Los Angeles native with a background in both hair and music.

As I reflect on my journey as a hairstylist, I am often shocked as I never imagined being where I am. It’s interesting how life will lead you down a path different from your plan.

I imagined myself traveling the world doing music, I allowed fear and comparison to rob me of that. Though music is my first passion, I’m grateful for my journey in the hair industry,

My start in the hair industry was influenced by my bonus mom LaShawnda Smith.

My friend Ronnie Knox (RIP) one of the best hairstylists on the west coast, shared so much wisdom, encouraged me to pursue a career in hair, and lead me to one of the best to do it, Lorisa Johnson Salon Eleven-11. My relationship and mentorship with Lorisa prepared and afforded me endless opportunities. I will forever be grateful for her time, love, wisdom, and care.

I can’t take the credit for my journey. Gods plan was different than my own, and though I’ve failed so many times, he’s been gracious.

I’ve encountered obstacles,  but I’ve learned to choose to persevere.

Comparison and fear were my greatest struggles and robbed me of the truth which was and forever will be, I’m enough, I’m fully equipped for all things purposed for me, and that is not measured by accolades, status, nor is it seeking validation and approval from others.

When asked the question of what sets me apart from others, I’d have to say it’s being aware that each of us is enough in our authenticity. Being set apart is realizing there is nothing or no one to compare to when I’m surrendered to my purpose. There is a misconception with admiration and the moment you focus too much on what and who one admires, it can lead to dissatisfaction within and that leads to a slippery slope in a journey/attempt to becoming often what wasn’t purposed for you.

I’m most proud of my resilience. I’m grateful to have been chosen and trusted to serve and enhance/ redefine what beauty is, deeper than, and beyond the look across the globe.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When I think of a good time, I think of live music, the ocean, Malibu, Newport, Laguna, and Hermosa to list a few. Good food, and  nice lounge, at both the hot spots in La and the hidden gems.  A rooftop setting, and we couldn’t leave out shopping.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My story wouldn’t be without my creator and I will forever take every opportunity to thank God for choosing and allowing me to serve across the globe. Next would be my amazing parents Michael Boyd Sr.(RIP) My amazing mother Helen Cole Clemons, which she is my friend, prayer warrior, and sounding board. Could never forget my supportive village “ MY FAMILY”. I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to any and everyone who struggles with believing that they are enough. I hope that something was shared that will awaken truth and shine a light on every dark area within and ultimately realign you to light, love, peace, truth, and hope.
