We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Ghiam, MD and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The driving force behind starting my own ENT practice was a desire to offer highly specialized care for complex sinus and skull base issues in a more accessible, personalized private setting.
As an ENT with advanced training in these intricate areas, I recognized that many patients with these conditions often had to seek treatment at large academic medical centers due to the level of expertise required. While academic centers provide excellent care, I wanted to create an alternative option focused on a more individualized, patient-centric experience.
In my own practice, I’m able to prioritize ease of access, clear communication, and building long-term relationships with patients as they navigate their treatment journey. I also saw it as an opportunity to create something of my own from the ground up – to shape a practice that reflects my values and vision, and that I could grow and evolve over time.
Ultimately, my goal was to leverage my niche skillset in a way that fills a need in the community, while also providing the professional autonomy and opportunities for impact that come with running one’s own business. I’m driven by the chance to make a meaningful difference in my patients’ lives and to build something lasting

What should our readers know about your business?
As an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) physician, I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the head and neck. Within this field, I have further specialized training as a Rhinologist and Skull Base Surgeon. This means I focus on managing complex conditions involving the nose, sinuses, and the base of the skull, which require a high level of surgical expertise.
What sets my practice apart is my dedication to delivering exceptional, individualized care to each patient. I take the time to listen, understand their unique concerns, and develop targeted treatment plans that prioritize their well-being. My advanced training allows me to handle intricate cases that many general ENTs may not feel comfortable treating, providing a valuable resource for patients with complex needs.
Building my practice from the ground up has been a challenging but rewarding journey. I started with no patient base, relying solely on the quality of my work and outcomes to grow. It took patience, perseverance, and a steadfast belief in my abilities to gradually establish a reputation in the community. I’m proud to say that the majority of my growth has been through word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied patients and colleagues who trust in the care I provide.
During times when patient volume was low, I focused on networking and building relationships with other doctors in the area. Connecting with primary care physicians, other specialists, and allied health professionals allowed me to collaborate on patient care and expand my referral base. It wasn’t always easy, but I remained committed to the process, knowing that building a strong foundation takes time.
One of the key lessons I’ve learned is the importance of staying true to my core values. By prioritizing patient care, continual learning, and ethical practice, I’ve been able to navigate the challenges of running a business while still finding deep fulfillment in my work. I believe that genuine passion for what you do and a commitment to excellence will always yield positive results, even if the path isn’t always smooth

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For a week-long California adventure with my best friend, we’d start by hiking the stunning coastal trails at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve in San Diego. We’d refuel with some delicious fish tacos at local favorites like Oscar’s Mexican Seafood or The Taco Stand.
Next, we’d head to the otherworldly Joshua Tree National Park for a day or two of hiking, rock climbing, and stargazing in the clear desert sky.
From there, we’d drive up to Los Angeles for a day of urban exploration. We’d start with a hike in the beautiful Griffith Park, followed by a visit to the iconic Griffith Observatory. For lunch, we’d grab some delicious Korean BBQ at Park’s BBQ or some gourmet tacos at Guerrilla Tacos. In the afternoon, we’d explore the vibrant arts district, checking out unique galleries and murals, before ending the day with sunset cocktails at the stylish Perch rooftop bar.
To wrap up the trip, we’d head to California’s Central Coast, basing ourselves in the charming town of Paso Robles. We’d spend our days visiting picturesque vineyards like DAOU Vineyards and Tablas Creek Vineyard, sampling the local vintages, and savoring farm-to-table cuisine at top restaurants like The Hatch Rotisserie & Bar and Les Petites Canailles. In between wine tastings, we’d explore the quaint downtown area, popping into unique shops and art galleries

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The number one shoutout undoubtedly goes to my amazing wife. She has been my rock throughout my journey, providing unwavering support in every way possible. During my years as a surgical trainee, when my income was low and my availability was extremely limited, she not only helped raise our children but also offered crucial financial and emotional support. Her dedication and sacrifice allowed me to focus on my training and growth as a surgeon. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without her by my side.
I also want to express my deepest gratitude to my mentors during my ENT surgical training. They played an instrumental role in harnessing and refining my skills, shaping me into the surgeon I am today. Their guidance, expertise, and willingness to invest in my development have left an indelible mark on my career. These mentors set an incredible example that I strive to emulate as I progress in my field.
Looking forward, I aim to pay it forward by becoming a mentor myself to future generations of young ENTs. I understand firsthand the profound impact that strong mentorship can have on one’s professional journey, and I’m committed to providing the same level of support and guidance that I received. It’s my way of honoring those who have helped me along the way and ensuring that their legacy of excellence lives on.
My success is a testament to the incredible people who have believed in me, supported me, and helped me grow. I am forever grateful for their contributions to my story
