We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Moyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michael, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Kids.Radio creates a positive social impact by providing a safe, free and engaging platform for children of all ages. Our app fosters creativity and learning, and provides entertainment through carefully curated music, audiobooks, and podcasts that are age appropriate, free from adult content and the negativity and inappropriate language that comes with it. By providing this age appropriate content, promoting literacy and reducing screen time, we support the cognitive and emotional development of our young listeners. Additionally, we give independent artists a platform to share their work, contributing to cultural diversity and inclusivity. As we like to say; from Americana to Zydeco, we’ve got you covered. Our mission is to offer a safe space where children can explore, and grow in a nurturing environment, offering families lasting memories and benefiting the broader community. And every time I see a kid singing along to a wonderful and catchy new tune with an incredible message, I know we’re doing something right.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kids.Radio is unique in that it’s an all-in-one streaming platform dedicated to providing a safe, enriching, and entertaining audio experience for children. What sets us apart is our commitment to exclusively kid-friendly content, curated to be free from adult themes and inappropriate language. Our offerings include a diverse range of music, audiobooks, and podcasts that promote literacy, creativity, and joyful learning. Consider a premium kid’s podcast player, we have all of that; plus thousands of kids audiobooks and songs. Not to mention our lean into radio. We’re still growing the station but we think future generations will refer to all music and possibly even podcasts, as radio, so we wanted the right mix of the new way adults listen with the old way we listened as kids, tuning into our favorite stations and waiting to hear what was next on the countdown, or what new song was just added. Now when that show’s playing, instead of waiting with your cassette ready to illegally record your favorite song… you can just add it to your favorites and listen 100 times AFTER the show.

The journey to where we are today was not easy. We faced significant challenges, especially as industry outsiders. Lacking connections to major labels and distributors, so we had to adapt right from the start. We decided to go directly to independent artists. This approach allowed us to discover and collaborate with numerous talented artists who shared our vision. However, the development process exceeded our initial budget and took much longer than we had anticipated. While this is still a bit of a challenge for us, we’re looking at it from the positive side – that we personally review each item that comes in. We were all once kids who loved listening to music, etc. – unfortunately as streaming services took over, we parents stopped allowing kids to have their own music, own choices. I remember as a kid, I desperately wanted the Snoopy and the Red Baron album. I received it for Christmas and played it over and over. Kids, don’t get that today. Parents have locked phones in order to, understandably, “reduce screen time”. We’re here to offer an alternative. They don’t need to stare at the phone to listen to their favorite songs.

One take away has been the amount of wonderful children’s music that we had no idea existed. It’s truly been a joy to listen to each artist as we do before adding them to the service. We want the world to know that Kids.Radio is dedicated to creating a positive and educational environment for children, providing them with the shared experience of radio in a way that is appropriate and enjoyable for their age. And our mission is to foster a love for learning and creativity while reducing screen time, ensuring that kids can explore a diverse world of audio content safely, and we think no one accomplishes that the way we have with our Kids.Radio streaming app.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh, wow. It’s been a while since I lived downtown so I imagine my old haunts have probably slipped away. But when I did live downtown my go to bar was Seven Grand. I really enjoyed hanging out there and it might even be where I discovered how much I enjoyed old school jazz. Well, my wife is a planner, so if it involves an itinerary, she’s taking that one. But, I’ll give it a go. Some of my favorites that I’d try to hit. Certainly the beach so maybe start with coffee’s at Huckleberry Cafe in Santa Monica. Then head to Santa Monica Pier, rent bikes and ride along the beachfront path. And since I’m a people watcher we’d have to stop in Venice Beach. Spend the afternoon watching the street performers and checking out the skateboarders at Venice Skatepark. Another day might include the architecture of downtown. Hit the Grand Central Market for breakfast, then check out The Bradbury Building and Walt Disney Concert Hall. Other days might include a hike and the Griffith Observatory, and probably the Hollywood Walk of Fame, just because. And if it’s the right day, a show at the Hollywood Bowl. If not then a possibly the Troubadour. I’d probably add another beach day, drive up to Zuma and enjoy the beach there or in Malibu for a while, then I hear Malibu Wine Safaris is nice but haven’t yet added that to my belt. And of course if the kids are with us, we’d have to do a Universal Studios day. Ride the Harry Potter rides, have a little butter beer.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely, our journey with Kids.Radio has been supported by many wonderful people and organizations. First and foremost, I want to thank my wife and kids. Their unwavering support, patience, and encouragement have been invaluable. Secondly, I couldn’t have done this without my co-founder and brother, Dennis, whose dedication and belief in our mission have been crucial.

I also want to give a special shoutout to The Children’s Music Network and their members. From the very beginning, they have been incredibly supportive and encouraging. Their commitment to creating and sharing quality children’s music has been a source of inspiration for us. This collective support has made Kids.Radio a reality, and I am deeply grateful to everyone involved.
