Meet Micheaux Dossette | Actor & Singer/Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Micheaux Dossette and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Micheaux, how do you think about risk?
I truly believe taking risks are under valued as one of the primary steps that shift a person’s mind into manifesting whatever success they are chasing.
Taking risks has been the one of the special ingredient that has consistently brought me closer to, and succeeding at my goals.
This leap of faith into the dark of taking a risk, has been a lighthouse that has directed me, knowing that on the other side of that risk is what I want. And also, through the process of getting to that goal, important character traits that are necessary for whatever new space I enter are developed.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My passion and drive is helping people see the many shades of love through the art of acting, singing and songwriting. It’s a very simple thing, but I also think it’s what sets me apart from others. I believe love is the only thing that exists on this planet that is all powerful. No matter what I’m doing, as long as love is the root people will connect to it. I also believe love is the most humane thing that exists in all of us and keeps us connected.
The thing that Im most proud of Is my graduate degree. This past May I graduated from the University Of Southern California with a Masters Degree in Acting. The degree is not the full gist of what Im most proud of, its also the three years I took off of life to go for broke at a passion I have always had. What ended up happening in this time, was a direct focus on myself that caused me to grow as a human in ways I don’t think I would have happened If I didn’t take this time to focus on me. And now as a result, my art goes deeper and is more fulfilling.
My journey to getting to where I am today professionally, has taken about 11 years. Along these 11 years I found myself chasing other peoples dreams because I happened to be good at what they do, or listening to other dictate what I should do based on where they saw me succeeding. The result would always end the same; a dead end and a restart. I got tired of that and started to unapologetically do what made me happy weather people agreed or not. And doing what made me happy started to open the doors I wanted open. My first TV show appearance was on Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Browns”. That opportunity led to more tv appearances on different show in Atlanta. During weeks of endless call backs at Tyler Perry Studios, I received life changing advice from an angel, casting director Rhavynn Drummer, to move to a bigger market because in her eyes I had something special within me, It just needed to be developed more. So I moved to NYC and started grinding. Musically I started much further back, but my big break (what I thought) was when I got signed as a singer/songwriter to a subsidiary Record label. Long story short, I learned a lot and grew from that experience, but I was dropped and none of my music ever got released. But that didn’t stop me. While living In NYC I worked as a singing server in restaurants and on cruises up and down the Hudson, while auditioning and doing small acting jobs here and there. Before leaving NYC I released my first single D.K.W. while simultaneously booking a job with Janelle Monàe where I sang and performed with her on the Stephen Colbert Show. Being able to see a super star create and work then bring it together showed me two things: 1. I have what it takes to do this. & 2. I am doing this, now, so how do I keep doing this.
Getting to where I am now had many ups and downs, but as I look back I see the ups and downs were determined by what was happening within me at the time. If I was in a space of confident, focused, prepared, and in enjoyment in what I was doing, then the process was easy and fun. But If I had self-doubt, was in competition with others, or felt I needed help from others to accomplish my goals, then the process was very challenging. The way I ended up overcoming these challenges was to go back within me and re-establish why I was doing, what I was doing, and to always lead with self love.
The biggest lesson Ive learned along my journey is the importance of self love. I don’t believe it’s selfish for a person to value themselves more than they value others or material things. In fact Ive learned, how you value you is how other will value you, Once I started to live by this rule, the doors started flying open.
I would love the world to know that If I can get up from the traumatic beat downs of life, then no matter what anyone is going through, they can to. Abuse, suicidal thoughts, homelessness, health concerns, or just hard time, I have been through them all and come out the other side better than before, evolved and healed. The key is to know that you will get through it. Love yourself and give your self grace, and you will soon see the sunshine on the other side of that storm. Love you, and never give up on your dream. Be a dream catcher, not a dream chaser.
