We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Glogovac and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I had a corporate career for almost 2 decades and lived by the motto “work hard, play hard”. For a long time I thought this was balance…to work equally as hard as you rested or simply enjoyed life. It wasn’t until after I had my kids and launched my own business that I discovered that work life balance truly means living in the moment in which you are actually in. If you are working on a project, then give it your full attention and focus. If the next hour you are playing barbies or dinosaurs or going for a bike ride, then live blissfully in that moment.
Work life balance isn’t about finding an actual balance, but about having the ability to be fully present in whatever moment you are in, whether that’s for 5 minutes or 8 hours. Balance is also being comfortable with spending whatever amount of time you can on something without feeling guilt for not spending time on another project or area of life.
As a working mom, there is a lot of talk about mom guilt and a stigma that we should basically feel guilty for wanting to work. I don’t agree with that at all. We should be enjoying the time we spend working, as well as the time we spend playing with our children. There’s no need for guilt or shaming because your definition of balance is unique to you.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a public relations agency that helps entrepreneurs, experts and authors change the world through media features and podcast interviews. My specialty is on the podcast side because I am THE podcast matchmaker. Pitching to the media is very different from pitching to podcasts, but since I started my business on the podcast side, I know exactly what it takes to land podcast interviews for clients that are not only great shows, but focus on their ideal audience.
When I decided to launch my business in 2018, I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go in, nor had I ever listened to a podcast. I knew that I wanted to do something that was unique and helped make the world a better place. Podcasts are an incredible way to reach people, as well as a way for listeners to learn, hear that they’re not alone in their experiences, and be entertained.
PR is such a fantastic tool for clients because it gets their message out to more people than if they were simply relying on social media or their email list. A lot of work goes into a good PR strategy and it is definitely a long game, but it can be incredibly worth it.
I’ve taken a lot of time to educate myself on podcasts, public relations, and network in order to get where I am today. My clients have been featured on CNN, Huffington Post, Popsugar, INSIDER, Cosmopolitan, HelloGiggles, Thrive Global, top 100 podcasts and many more. No one is an overnight success, but if you dedicate time and energy into not only knowing your craft but in getting to know others within your industry, your clients, and make a genuine effort to create relationships, then anything is possible.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I reside in the Bay Area, so my favorite spots are around San Francisco. The day has to start off with Irish coffees at the Buena Vista followed by a tour of Fort Mason under the Golden Gate bridge and a stroll across the bridge. If visiting around Christmas, then seeing Union Square is a MUST and strolling down holiday lane in Macy’s followed by dinner at Sears Fine Food and dessert and drinks at the Top of the Mark. You can’t miss a cable car ride, a tour of Alcatraz, lunch or dinner on the pier, clam chowder at Fisherman’s Wharf and ice cream sundaes at Ghiradelli.
I did live in Los Angeles for a time as well and loved visiting Santa Monica for the beach, sushi and cocktails!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest support has always come from my husband, Ted. When I was laid off in 2018 and decided I wanted to launch a business of my own, he encouraged me to do it and has continued to support and encourage me along the entire journey.
I think everyone needs a “business bestie” and mine has been Keren de Zwart of Not Your Father’s Lawyer. Keren always lends a listening ear, offers amazing advice and encouragement and simply understands what it means to be a solopreneur and mom.
I’ve read MANY books over the years, but one of my faves has been Winging It by Emma Isaacs. I was fortunate enough to have Emma as a guest on my podcast as well. Emma has always been an entrepreneur and shares the secrets to her success…don’t overthink things, stop asking for the opinions of others and always network!
