We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle, Melissa, and Maria Can and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, Melissa, and Maria, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Growing up as three sisters very close in age, we were lucky enough to be able to share clothes and often loved helping one another piece together outfits. Despite our uniquely individual styles, we always agreed that the most important part of a look is the accessories. We’ve always shared a love for fashion and jewelry and wanted to start a business where we could bring together our different styles and our common interests into a single brand. We chose jewelry because we have a family background in jewelry and thus, Gold By Manna was born.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Ever since we were young, we’d always loved being creative and expressing our individuality through a variety of means. Whether we were cooking a meal with unconventional ingredients or attempting dramatic makeup looks, we always enjoyed expressing ourselves and pushing out of our comfort zone. What we love about Gold By Manna is that we have the freedom to express that creativity in the form of a business and we get to see our customers love the work that we produce.
The toughest challenge we faced was being comfortable with the risk of starting a new business. We overcame that challenge by reminding ourselves that our fears were the only thing holding us back and that every big decision comes with some risk that needs to be thought through.
To date, the biggest factor for our success has been taking a data driven approach to business decisions. Because Gold By Manna is an online jewelry business, all interactions with our customers happen virtually so we rely on data from social media and e-commerce platforms to receive feedback from customers and better understand their needs. As co-founders that have backgrounds in engineering and economics, we recognize the benefits of having access to that data and how to utilize it to improve our customer experience.
Along the way, we’ve learned it’s important to experiment and try different things, especially when it comes to diversifying your products. We try to introduce new jewelry pieces that are unique and different from our current selection because this allows us to learn a lot about our customers’ style preferences.
We want the world to know that Gold By Manna is founded by three women who have a passion for jewelry and is committed to offering high quality fine jewelry at an affordable price. We hope our brand inspires women to look and feel their best in jewelry that they can wear everyday.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If our friends were visiting Los Angeles, the following food options would be on the itinerary:
– Brunch at The Rooftop by JG (the fluffiest pancakes you can find and an epic panoramic view of LA)
– Lunch at Malibu Farms (get the lobster roll and a pitcher of frosé to enjoy with a view of the ocean)
– Dinner at Mother Wolf is a must
– Dinner at Ysabel and don’t forget to order the truffle fries
– Dinner at Perle in Pasadena for an authentic French spread
For drinks we would definitely visit Bar Lis, Laurel Hardware, or Library Bar before heading out to Delilah or Warwick
Our favorite places to spend the day are at Century City for some shopping, Griffith Observatory at sunset, the Getty Villa museum in Pacific Palisades, or at the beach.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’d like to dedicate our shoutout to our parents. Our mom for always encouraging us to strengthen our bond as siblings and to start a business together. And our father who is a jeweler and would take us to work with him since we were little, teaching us the ropes and sparking our interest in the jewelry industry at a young age.
