Meet Mick Lowery | Business Owner, Photographer, Self-Care advocate & future investor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mick Lowery and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mick, how do you think about risk?
By definition risk is exposure to loss. I believe that setting goals and having the courage to go through the process to achieve those goals is a risk within itself. I truly believe that life’s risk involves love, growth, and experience. On the other hand risk in business, in my belief, are investing time and money. Anything you have to sacrifice for in life or in business is a risk. Life will provide opportunities for growth, love and experience but it is up to us to take that leap of faith. Within those opportunities you will have to lose, “cut-off”, some old habits by doing so you may LOSE out on friends & even family. For example, me deciding to change certain habits in order to become a better version of myself. Cutting out certain habits, caused my life to go a different direction than some of the people that I called friends. Nothing is wrong with separation, however with me wanting to grow, I did think that I will lose some friends that I truly care for, but that is a RISK that I am willing to take in order to achieve this goal for myself. I think there is nothing wrong with risking certain things & people, as it’s worth it. I do not believe that a temporary feeling is worth any risk, however a lifetime memory or financial prosperity is worth a risk.
I’ve took plenty of risk in life and in my career. Of course some of those risk were followed by a learning lesson, but some of those risk are followed by success. One small risk in my career that I learned from was investing in individual promoter versus investing into a marketing team. An individual promoter will only passively promote the flyer and caption on social media. Versus a marketing team that will develop a concept, timeline, target market, and will cover all advertising aspects within the field of marketing. A risk that I took in life that has added to my value as an individual, was becoming comfortable as a solo travel. Solo traveling is a HUGE risk, but it provides a sense of self confidence, awareness, and clarity that is priceless. Me becoming a solo traveler also expanded my networking across the world. We all know that our network is equivalent to our net worth. One question that is often asked, “what is that you do for a living?”. That open-ended question gives opportunity to introduce my business, which leads to potential growth in business. Two different outcomes for those risk, however both risk taught me something that is impactful for my future.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
To Start I will say my business has grown tremendously. My art has became more of my focus and has motivated me to be more of an example in my community. In my last interview with Voyage, I talked about Lowery Unique Vision, my photo and videography business. Since then, I have gained a larger clientele base (which is great), sharpened my Networking skills, and developed an understanding of the importance of self care and health, and how it can effect your career. With all that’s going on in the world, Self care helps with mental clarity and has a strong impact on your health, your business and all of your relationships. making it easier to focus on your goals. It is not easy putting yourself first and it requires discipline. As entrepreneurs we can be so focused and overwhelmed with becoming successful that we forget all about our self care. Understanding this is a proud moment for me. I haven’t been this clear minded, happy and peaceful in a long time. I do have my days, as everyone, when I feel overwhelmed, but it doesn’t last as long as it used to.
It’s been while since I have had peace within myself. It took a lot of tears, laughs, vacations, conversations, changes, research and a healthy support team to get to where I am. Yes, I still do photography and videography, but I knew within myself I wanted no needed to do more and add more value to someone else life. So I decided to plan my non-profit organization creating programs for mental health, motivation and resources in the minority community. This project is necessary in order for me to fulfill my life purpose. I have sacrificed much not just financially but sacrificed people. Changing old habits and building new ones is not an easy task but if you want change you have to start with a clear mind and focus.
Another challenge I have faced was understanding that growth does not come overnight. We all know that saying, but very few of us truly know the full meaning of it. I have been through much! The emotion of not being good enough and wanting to give up. The emotion of confusion, The pressure of wanting to be the greatest, The anxiety of knowing that you not even close to where you want to be but you’re in the right direction. These emotions are apart of the growth. It’s the rollercoaster of life but with the right support team that believes in you this ride is an easy learning challenge I promise you that.
One thing I want the world to know about me. Is that I am far from perfect, I am blessed and highly favored. With God I can do all things. If anyone every needs a mental support team you can always count on me, and I will be there the best way I can.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
These are some of the places in Los Angeles County I will take someone:
– any black owned food trucks
– Point Dume in Malibu (Malibu Beach)
– Hiking to a waterfall
– City of Pasadena (city I was born in)
– My boy Jamal barbershop
– Santa Monica shopping district
– The Americana in Glendale
– a friend’s house for game night/a bbq
– Any rooftop bar for brunch
– drive down to San Diego for a day (if its the summer time)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First Let me thank God for blessing me with the talent and giving me opportunity to share my dream with the world. I want to give thanks to my biggest supporters that have supported with me through my business journey. Honestly I have one of the greatest support team that a person can ask for and I am beyond grateful. From actual bookings to the smallest means of liking or sharing a photo on social media. Between my mother, my graphic designer, my mentors, my team, my clients and my friends I am extremely resilient. I have my days where I feel as though the world is against me and the support of my team keeps me lifted and driven to always keep going. I am going to try to name everyone I considered to be apart of my support team, and if I miss somebody please don’t hold it against me! Of course starting with my mother Earlene Lowery, my cousin who keeps it “real” at all time Jeanine Kendricks, Janiya “Storm” Jeter my go to when I extremely overthink, Sade “HoneyB” Moné my co-creator & graphic designer, Jamal Tillmon who keeps me busy and on my toes with constant content creating. Not to forget my friends Brendi, Mechie, Jeff, Ross and Trevion are my biggest motivators. These people have been in my corner and supported me on my journey and they are also the air when needing to get away from my work. Although I’m focused on my business, I also know the importance of enjoying life. Air is well needed when I’m overwhelmed and need a break. So shoutout to everyone that has been down for me in my worst, and best moments. We have a lot more to do and I will make sure with all of me to be everything that God has created me to be. I love you all for just considering me. It seriously means everything and I will not stop no matter what.
