We had the good fortune of connecting with Micky Shiloah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Micky, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I think the only time to give up is when you lose the passion for what you’re doing. If the passion is still there – keep going. If it takes a long time, but you get glimpses of moving up, little successes, stepping stones to the next level – keep going.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I’ve been acting for many years – starting in NY doing theater (off-Broadway, Radio City Music Hall) and commercials, and then to LA to pursue TV/Film. After years of auditioning and living the typical actor life (with some successes along the way) and performing with my comedy/improv troupe The MaD JaCKRaTS, I started to utilize social media and post original content. It was a slow burn at first, but eventually gained some traction with my song/video “I’m Gay”, the “Mary & Joseph” series created with Truett Jean Butler, and then my social media series Anthony & Diane. I’m now lucky enough to be creating episodes on a regular basis, playing every character. I’m grateful for my extremely dedicated following that has come from the show and I’m having a blast expanding the universe of these characters and the series.

The biggest lesson I learned along the way is not to wait around for a “yes” – but to create the thing you’re waiting to get cast in (or the thing you want to do in general). Social media makes it so easy to post original content that you have full creative control over. I wouldn’t say it’s easy to break through and find your audience, but once I really started tapping into what I wanted to do, stopped holding back, and created something similar to an idea I had for almost a decade (but never actually created) – that’s when things started to take off.

For so many years, I waited for the industry to “accept” me and take me in, but it wasn’t until I took matters into my own hands that I felt a real sense of accomplishment and growth in entertainment. It’s still a building process, but the only person I have to answer to is myself – and that feels great!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I love a great hike (LA, duh!) and so I would take them to the Wisdom Tree hike. We’d check out the tree and then head the back way to get behind the Hollywood sign.

In & Out would be the top choice for food – you can never go wrong with In & Out!

I love to drive through the hills and check out the amazing houses. A brief stop in Beverly Hills just so they could say they’ve been there…and then to the Griffith Park Observatory.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to Lauren Patrice Nadler at LPN Studios for providing an outlet for me to grow as an actor and improvisor over the years – in classes and with our troupe The MaD JaCKRaTS (www.LPNSImprov.com).

Lewaa Nasserdeen for giving me the push to start my own series.

I’d also love to dedicate it to my loving and always supportive family and to my close friends and collaborators.
