We had the good fortune of connecting with Miggy Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miggy, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I would say it pursued me! I strongly believe we were created to create.
The more I create the more I get to experience. The people, places and things I’ve been able to come across through my camera has been really cool.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I juggle 3 different things, I’m a photographer, a boxing coach and a at home coffee shop/barista.
What sets me a part from others? Hmm, I’m me. I understand the being that I am. Which allows me to create in freedom. The same way whoever is reading this is who they are, there is no one like you!
One of the experiences I’m most proud of is getting the opportunity to live in Jinja, Uganda(East Africa) when I was 19. That really helped kick start the pursuit of photographing people/life.
I’m really excited about the new dreams that have stirred up within me these last few months! I feel like I’m barely getting started and thats after 10 years of taking pictures.
How did I get to where I’m at today professionally? Faith. I took a huge leap of faith leaving my last job. I had it really good there. Great bosses, great coworkers. Great money, but the financial comfort was killing me. I knew that that comfort was holding me back from taking more risk. So I took the risk. Here we are today, Its been almost exactly a year to the date as I write this that I left that job. It’s been hard, but it’s been rewarding. I’ve learned so many lessons these last 12 months, but the main one is “Life is hard! So choose your hard.” Life is hard working for a corporate job, life is hard working for a small business, life is hard running your own business. Life is hard single. Life is hard married. Choose your hard and be grateful for what it comes with.
I’d like the world to know that I’m a really good friend and a really good movie goer, I love the movies!! haha. In a more serious note, I’d like people to know that I’m a pretty cool guy that loves his family, loves people and loves to create. And I’d love to connect with more people learn about their story.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week trip? There isn’t that much to do out here haha. If it was a day trip I’d take them to The Modern Tea Room for breakfast. After that, a nice walk/stroll on Lancaster Blvd. Then I’d take them to Bluemaki or Kaze Sushi for lunch. Watch a movie at Cinemark because I’m a Platinum Member, thats right I just became 10X cooler. After a good movie and popcorn I’d take them to Third Place for dinner and drinks.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to shoutout my family! You guys are the best. Thank you for always believing in me. My mom and pops, los amo mucho!! My best friends, Chama. Everyone that has been a part of my circle for the last two years, I love you guys!!! Seriously, I wouldn’t acknowledge my gifts if it weren’t for all of you rooting for me the way that you do. Last but not least, God. Thank you for this abundant life, you da you da best!
