Meet Mikaella Martinez | Content Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikaella Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikaella, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Content creation in the beauty space started out as a hobby in 2019. I worked my corporate job during the day and worked on creating content all night. I would find little pockets of time to unwind throughout the week,to shoot videos or take aesthetic photos of skincare and beauty products. Sometime in early 2020, I had my first contract to create sponsored content for a brand. Ever since then, I spent more of my free time to creating videos, taking photos, and working with brands. I really enjoyed both my corporate job and content creation that both consumed a majority of my time, leaving little time to do other things. I would come in to the office for my corporate job early, leave late, and even work more at home. Then I would stay up all night, pulled all-nighters, and spend all weekend working on content creation. This past year, I focused on finding balance since I realized there are plenty of other things that is enjoyable in life – its not all about work. How I think about balance is by keeping a slower pace, making sure to spend time with important people in my life, and by unplugging.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Selfcareinpajamas is a beauty and lifestyle page on both tiktok and instagram. What sets selfcareinpajamas apart from other pages is that I create content solely around what I believe is selfcare. Whether that may be my skincare/beauty routine, cooking recipes, fashion/style, or simple day-to-day wellness acts. While I started in the beauty/skincare space, I slowly introduced and shared other interests I have that my followers would also love to see. The only challenging thing about this was that not everyone will enjoy all things I share. One follower may enjoy my skincare content, but not care to see food content. I have learned that is okay. When I post something, I will ask myself, “Is this authentic to me and am I proud of this piece of content?” I always make sure to value my opinions first before the opinion and judgement of others. I spend a good amount of time making sure the content I create and curate are authentic to me and my feelings – that is what I hope someone will notice when seeing my posts.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a huge foodie, so any friend of mine would love a food tour as much as I would. I would think we would start out on Melrose for coffee from either Carrera Cafe, Joe and the Juice, or Alfred Coffee. If I’m feeling adventurous, Lalaland Kind Cafe in Santa Monica is a great coffee spot and I would insist on getting the lala froth on top! Breakfast would be at the Great White – either on Melrose or Larchmont Village. Sugarfish would be my lunch go-to. Then for dinner I would suggest Bone Kettle, Marugame Monzo, Uovo, Joy, or De La Nona.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I appreciate the support I receive from my small community/followers on instagram and tiktok. However, owe a lot of my confidence and perseverance to create content to Susan Yara, and the team behind The Center Brands, specifically Haley Polkes. One of my biggest accomplishments is having been able to work with them. I will always be grateful for their support and allowing me to create content for their brand. Selfcareinpajamas wouldn’t be where it is and what it is today had I not crossed paths with them.
