We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk-taking has been pivotal in shaping both my personal life and professional career. Opting to pursue filmmaking was a bold decision laden with uncertainty, as it demanded significant investments of time, energy, and finances. Despite the initial challenges, I committed to attending top film schools, securing industry internships, winning artistic grants, and fostering connections with seasoned professionals. This entailed prioritizing long-term aspirations over immediate gratification, redirecting funds towards education and projects rather than material luxuries. However, the recognition and positive reception garnered along the journey have validated my choices. I’ve come to realize that self-belief and unwavering dedication are essential ingredients for success, affirming the importance of taking calculated risks and trusting in one’s creative vision.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Crafting stories through film is more than just a passion for me—it’s my ultimate expression of artistry. Inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s profound insight that “The root of any film project for me is this inner need to express something,” I dive into each project driven by an innate desire to capture the pulse of humanity.

Growing up in Petersburg, Virginia—a small town with less than 40,000 people steeped in Black culture and sultry Southern charm—and now navigating the bustling streets of New York City, I’ve absorbed a myriad of experiences that fuel my storytelling with authenticity and depth.

My journey, from the hallowed halls of Howard University to the creative crucible of NYU Film School, has been a relentless pursuit of narratives that amplify the complexity of Black and Brown lives. With several award-winning short films under my belt that we been broadcast on Revolt, CNBC, and FoxSoul, I also completed a feature documentary that was showcased on Netflix titled “25 TO LIFE.”

I’m striving to make waves in the industry. Drawing inspiration from the unapologetic boldness of Spike Lee, the poignant resonance of John Singleton, and the nuanced storytelling of Kasi Lemmons, I endeavor to infuse my films with the rhythm and richness of life itself. But my cinematic endeavors aren’t merely about entertainment—they’re a platform for tackling pressing social issues head-on. From gun violence to mental health struggles, I aim to shed light on the raw humanity of characters navigating the intricate intersections of identity, culture, and class in America.

Through my lens, I seek to bridge divides and cultivate empathy, sparking conversations that transcend boundaries. I’m not interested in crafting superficially “hopey, changey” stories; instead, I aim to delve into the messy, contradictory fabric of the human experience. This journey hasn’t simply been a walk on the beach. Sacrifices have been made, and setbacks encountered. Yet, with each hurdle, I’ve emerged stronger, more determined. Collaborative by nature, filmmaking has taught me the value of community, the importance of nurturing relationships, and the power of shared vision.

As I continue to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of cinema, I remain resolute in my commitment to crafting stories that entertain, provoke, and, ultimately, inspire.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love visiting Los Angeles, but home for me is New York City. This is list of things I would do to show you the best time ever.

Coffee: Kickstarting many of my early mornings with a cup of Blank Street’s flavorful coffee, I think that is a good place to start. I also find solace in the ambiance of Plantshed Cafe, nestled in the heart of NYC. Its unique blend of plants, florals, and brews offers a refreshing escape amidst the city’s hustle and bustle.

Cultural Attractions: Embarking on a cultural journey, we can indulge in the artistic offerings across NYC. From the renowned Lincoln Center or Apollo Theater, where the stage comes alive, to outdoor film screenings hosted by the Bronx Independent Cinema Center, there’s always something to captivate us. On summery Sunday’s, there’s usually a lively block party in Brooklyn near Bed-Vyne Brew, and I like going there to see all the beautiful people out and about. Nearby, the captivating exhibits at the Brooklyn Museum offer immersive experiences that celebrate the diversity of art and culture. Around Labor Day, I would also take friends to the West Indian American Day Carnival parade near the Brooklyn Museum for a great time!

Food: Navigating the culinary landscape of NYC is an adventure in itself. Whether we’re savoring a boozy rooftop brunch at Vida Verde or relishing a flavorful Dominican breakfast at El Castillo De Jagua Restaurant, every dining experience is a journey for the taste buds. For dinner, I’d recommend the award-winning vegan soul food at Cadence in the East Village, Aliya—fine dining at Hotel Indigo Brooklyn, or Ricardo’s Steakhouse in Harlem.

Lounges, Clubs, and Bars: When friends are in town, I peep the IG pages of socialites like @DJCeo, @TheLayoutco, and others for hottest places to go. Immersing ourselves in the vibrant nightlife of NYC, we can party the night away at cool venues like The Wiggle Room, Little Sister, or enjoy breathtaking views at Jimmy’s Rooftop. With each venue offering its own unique ambiance and energy, the possibilities for unforgettable nights out are endless. For those seeking a more laid-back vibe, the Lit Bar in the Bronx provides the perfect blend of wine and books, while Nublu and the legendary Blue Note offer soul-stirring live music performances.

Sports: For sports enthusiasts, a trip to Yankee Stadium or Madison Square Garden promises an electrifying experience. Whether we’re cheering on the Yankees in the Bronx or catching a Knicks game at the Garden, the thrill of live sports and the chance to spot iconic figures like Spike Lee or Carmelo Anthony only adds to the excitement.

Shopping: Exploring the fashion mecca of the world, we can indulge or go window shopping at exclusive boutiques like Vinnie’s Styles, Planes, or Louis Vuitton. From high-end luxury brands to trendy streetwear labels, NYC offers a diverse array of shopping destinations to satisfy every style aficionado.

Health & Wellness: To recharge and rejuvenate, a visit to Grae Wellness near Union Square offers the perfect sanctuary for relaxation. Whether it’s indulging in a massage, practicing mindfulness through meditation, or finding inner balance with a yoga class, it’s a good place to nourish the body, mind, and soul amidst the bustling energy of NYC.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my colleague Daisy Lewellyn, style expert and native of Los Angeles. Daisy would always support my creative work before she passed from cancer in 2016. Also, I would like to shoutout my entire cast, crew, and executive producers, Christopher P. and Kameron, of my most recent short film “The Celebration.” The making of “The Celebration” was a team effort, with a grant from New York State Council on the Arts, fiscal sponsorship from Third World Newsreel, and camera sponsorship from Arri Rental. My producer, Margie Merritt, and cinematographer, Justyn T. Davis, were especially dedicated to making “The Celebration” a success. My leading cast members, Shanae Harris and Jonathan Anderson, poured their hearts into the character portrayals as well. As a result, we made a compelling film. I look forward to touring the film festival circuit later this year.
