We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Falkow and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was pretty inevitable for me. I tried working the 9-5 thing and it just didn’t match up with my sensibilities. I liked the freedom of being a freelancer and the discipline that it took to make that lifestyle work. It frankly took quite a lot of stress and not knowing where your next pay check is coming from, but in the end I knew it would pay off.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a bit of a hyphenate so it’s hard to put things in a box when you wear many hats. I’m a writer, a designer and Creative Director, and I’m a partner in a digital marketing and PR company. When I was younger I was a competitive surfer and learned early on that your biggest competition is yourself, so I’ve applied that logic throughout my life. Because I didn’t want to fall into the corporate world and definitely preferred the freelance life, I was sort of forced to take things on by necessity. There were a lot of challenges along the way, and I wouldn’t say it was easy by any stretch of the imagination, but it was worth it and I learned that persistence definitely has an upside. Luckily I had a skill that could pay my bills and fund my creative pursuits until those creative pursuits started to pay the bills as well.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA has so many things to see and so many fun activities to get into. If I had to pick a few top choices, they’d probably include – Driving up the coast to Santa Barbara or spending the day at Point Dume; Walking up the Santa Monica pier and the Venice boardwalk; Seeing a movie at the Chinese Theatre; Checking out the horse races at Santa Anita park; Cocktails on the beach in Malibu; Driving up Beachwood to the Hollywood sign; Hiking up Fryman or Runyon canyons; Sushi in Studio City; Dinner, drinks and nightlife in Hollywood…

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d have to say my mom. She’s looked out for me and supported me in most everything I’ve done in my life.
